    Now the Repubs will have something to start unifying around. If Obama ramrods his guy in, Repubs continue to fracture. But if Repubs force a withdrawal of a nomination, they get some oxygen.

    Worst case is skeletons pop out of the nominee’s closet during the hearings and Repubs get mileage without lifting a finger.

    I am expecting the wingnuts to invent a new form of attempted disqualification, like they tried to do with Sebelius “She accepted money from a doctor who performs abortions!” etc.

    Souter is one of the most reliable members of the liberal/moderate wing. Anthony Kennedy is what passes for the swing vote.

    Obama at best will just hold serve with this appointment.

    At least Souter has said that he will serve until a replacement is confirmed. He’s not gonna leave the Court in a 4-4 balance.

    Souter never dug DC. He wants to move back to rural New England I’d reckon. Ruth’s health makes her next… followed by JPS’s age. (What’s he like 117 years of age?)

    The conservartives are all relatively young and in good health.

    Yeah, BL Roberts, Alito, Thomas and Scalia are so reasonable & open-minded. That partisan knife cuts both ways.

    Part of the beauty of this is that it opens up another opportunity for the majority of repubs to flail their unpopular social agenda in front of the country. They can’t suddenly go all socially moderate now without alienating their base, so they’ll have to get their extremist anti-women, anti-gay, anti-labor, anti-environment machine running loudly.

    Also, with Specter’s defection, they no longer have a ranking member on the Judiciary Committee which makes the actual fight in the Senate that much more difficult.
