I don’t think it’s fair that these Republicans get to enjoy Cinco de Mayo after all hatemongering they have encouraged towards Latinos and Mexicans specifically, but at the same time it’s kind of funny. Cinco de Mayo is significant to Mexican-Americans the same way St. Patrick’s Day is a significant to Irish-Americans. Cinco de Mayo is not widely celebrated in Mexico as it is here in the U.S., but neither was St. Patrick’s Day in Ireland. Frank McCourt said of this holiday that it was not a joyous holiday but rather a holy day of obligation when you went to Mass and that was it. Both St. Patrick’s Day and Cinco de Mayo are a way for Mexican-Americans and Irish Americans to take pride in cultural hertiage and share it with others through music, food, and alcohol. It’s a positive thing. Mexicans in the U.S. maintain some old customs/celebrations and create new ones depending on their location, own family customs, and conscious decisions on whether or not they wish to maintain cultural hertiage in their lives.

Progressive Republicans… interesting concept, but do any exist in real life? I can’t imagine one getting elected or even getting a nickel from the RNC. I wonder, will Protack tap any of these people to “rebuild the DE GOP”?

Oh, I have issues with cooky-conservatives, too (my counter to those who say ‘loony-left’). I know no one wants to believe this (sort of the branding/labelling thing in play, as well), but there are Progressive Republicans within. Unfortunately, not the most confident bunch.

I know you don’t like the moniker ‘racists’ bandied about, but what do you think “traditional values” are? (Back in the day when I lived in my lily white neighborhood and gays stayed in the closet!) When conservatives talk about family values whose family are they refering to? On social issues Republicans are implicity bigoted and xenophobic. Let’s all just drop the Orwellian language and call it like it is.

Economic issues are another matter.

Okay, RSmitty, if the Delaware GOP is so different than the national party, let’s see some action as far as immigration reform, civil marriages, early childhood education, loosen up of draconian drug laws and affirmative action. Then we can talk.

I was talking about specific people who aren’t (this organizing group in Wilmington), but I guess that doesn’t fit your all-encompassing blanket regarding this post, does it?
