This Cohen thing has me all worked up.
Comment by R Smitty on 23 April 2009 at 10:36 pm:
Hmm…right. She may be there. Want me to sneak you in? Of course, my credentials may have already been revoked.
Comment by jason330 on 23 April 2009 at 10:40 pm:
Wait. All we need is Mike Mathews and Protack and it would be a perfect storm of craziness.
Comment by anonone on 23 April 2009 at 10:42 pm:
Oh, sneak me in, RSmitty! I want to feel what it is like to get drunk on margaritas and discussing teh gays, teabagging, Sarah, and Rush with you guys. Will Maria be there?
Can I wear my bandoleer belts crossed my chest and my Mexican hat? Or how about my “Remember the Alamo” Tee shirt?
Comment by R Smitty on 23 April 2009 at 10:45 pm:
I prefer bandoleer belts. Brings up all that cozy second amendment talk.
BTW, A1, is this you, in your bandoleer belts?
Comment by anonone on 23 April 2009 at 10:50 pm:
No, when I wear bandoleer belts, I wear ONLY bandoleer belts and nothing else, if you get my drift.
It would probably be too much for Maria.
Comment by R Smitty on 23 April 2009 at 10:51 pm:
No one’s afraid of a pea-shooter, A1!
Comment by R Smitty on 23 April 2009 at 10:51 pm:
Hmm…pardon the pun (not intended…really).
Comment by anonone on 23 April 2009 at 10:54 pm:
My pee shooter ain’t no pea shooter. (Pardons all around)
Comment by nemski on 23 April 2009 at 11:53 pm:
The Republicans are co-opting Cinco de Mayo. This makes no sense.
Comment by liberalgeek on 24 April 2009 at 7:04 am:
They think Mexican Independence Day is a future event to celebrate the Mexicans leaving the US.
Comment by nemski on 24 April 2009 at 7:29 am:
Next year, the GOP will be celebrating Ramadan.
Comment by Dorian Gray on 24 April 2009 at 7:56 am:
I plan to drop acid and attend dressed as Raoul Duke. I’ll ask if anyone would like to volunteer to be waterboarded with cups of tea.
Comment by nemski on 24 April 2009 at 8:06 am:
LOL Dorian.
I wonder if these same Republicans will be participating in the immigration rights march on May 1st.
This party is seriously fucked up. Have the Republicans no shame?
Comment by jason330 on 24 April 2009 at 8:35 am:
When does Mexican food graduate from the “ethnic Isle” of the grocery store?
You don’t see lasagna and marinara sauce in that row anymore. Can’t we all agree that Mexican food is American food now?
Comment by Unstable Isotope on 24 April 2009 at 8:41 am:
Have the Republicans no shame?
No.
Comment by RSmitty on 24 April 2009 at 8:56 am:
OK, this “no shame” or “racist” argument in this thread is kind of lame, but I can see the opportunity given recent history, so I won’t push back all that much.
In America, other than Mexican-Americans, the idea of Cinco De Mayo has no genuine meaning, other than an excuse to pretend to know the deal and get drunk, nor has it ever had any meaning, including when it became significant to Mexican-Americans, but there’s a twist to even that! Without looking it up, who knows the significance of Cinco De Mayo? Anyone? Only clue: it has NOTHING to do with the Mexican Independence Day, which is actually Dieciséis de Septiembre.
Unfortunately, this is another not-well-thought-out PR stunt. Really, I know a decent amount of the people there, and there is no ill-intent and I ask you to please understand that. It’s getting almost cliche for you all to dismiss this particular group as racist, bigoted, whatever, but they aren’t. As far as not thinking consequence far enough through? Yeah, guilty.
Now, for all you culture hounds, back to the question, why is Cinco De Mayo significant? Better question, is it really significant at all?
Comment by nemski on 24 April 2009 at 9:00 am:
I respectively disagree RSmitty. The Republican Party has been the anti-immigration and anti-brown skin party for some time now, and for the local GOP to co-opt a Mexican-American holiday to have a “Happy Hour” is a shame.
Comment by nemski on 24 April 2009 at 9:03 am:
I waiting for the invitation to the GOP Juneteenth Happy Hour.
Comment by RSmitty on 24 April 2009 at 9:06 am:
Maybe it’s because I know some of the organizers and I know they aren’t what they are being made out to be. We have differences in perspective. I am NOT debating you on the image of the party-on-the-whole, though. There is damage for sure. I am defending this specific group in Wilmington. I do give them an absolute failing grade of “WTF” for this, as in “WTF” are you thinking?
On a side note, is Jason going to have his Cinco De Mayo party on his deck this year?
Comment by RSmitty on 24 April 2009 at 9:07 am:
Forget it, nemski. You are labelling them all racist, then. It shows.
Comment by nemski on 24 April 2009 at 9:14 am:
Yes, I am labeling The Republican Party as racists. You can keep on pretending otherwise, but that doesn’t change their modus operandi.
Comment by RSmitty on 24 April 2009 at 9:20 am:
I was talking about specific people who aren’t (this organizing group in Wilmington), but I guess that doesn’t fit your all-encompassing blanket regarding this post, does it?
Sorry, but when the class was held showing how to distribute “racist” like candy on Halloween night, I skipped it for a reason.
Comment by nemski on 24 April 2009 at 9:20 am:
Okay, RSmitty, if the Delaware GOP is so different than the national party, let’s see some action as far as immigration reform, civil marriages, early childhood education, loosen up of draconian drug laws and affirmative action. Then we can talk.
Comment by RSmitty on 24 April 2009 at 9:25 am:
Your logic, though, you label me one as well, and that couldn’t be any further from the truth, but I don’t see where that bothers you one freaking bit.
Comment by Dorian Gray on 24 April 2009 at 10:00 am:
I know you don’t like the moniker ‘racists’ bandied about, but what do you think “traditional values” are? (Back in the day when I lived in my lily white neighborhood and gays stayed in the closet!) When conservatives talk about family values whose family are they refering to? On social issues Republicans are implicity bigoted and xenophobic. Let’s all just drop the Orwellian language and call it like it is.
Economic issues are another matter.
Comment by RSmitty on 24 April 2009 at 10:06 am:
Oh, I have issues with cooky-conservatives, too (my counter to those who say ‘loony-left’). I know no one wants to believe this (sort of the branding/labelling thing in play, as well), but there are Progressive Republicans within. Unfortunately, not the most confident bunch.
Comment by Dorian Gray on 24 April 2009 at 10:14 am:
Progressive Republicans… interesting concept, but do any exist in real life? I can’t imagine one getting elected or even getting a nickel from the RNC. I wonder, will Protack tap any of these people to “rebuild the DE GOP”?
Comment by RSmitty on 24 April 2009 at 10:19 am:
Protack is no more progressive than you are conservative. He may state otherwise, but you’ve seen what happens when he goes on a rant here. His claims of being progressive are BS.
Yeah, we exist, but as I said, not the most condifent bunch. Working on that.
Comment by Dorian Gray on 24 April 2009 at 12:13 pm:
Smitty – You’re right about MP. I was being facetious. On the other score… you have quite a task.
Comment by cassandra_m on 24 April 2009 at 12:24 pm:
you have quite a task.
You certainly do — since some version or the other of the Southern Strategy seems to be the starting point of much of the cultural campaign waged by Rs.
Comment by Joanne Christian on 24 April 2009 at 8:27 pm:
Smitty–I’m pragmatic progressive–will that do?
Hi everybody–I don’t know if DL banned me, but I snuck back in now. How come my home site keeps coming up “system maintenance”–it’s been 4 days now!!!
But if I’m banned, please send word thru Tyler at DeLibertarian. Thank you.
Comment by jason330 on 24 April 2009 at 8:29 pm:
Not banned JC. I will say that our spam filter is a bit gunked up – so maybe a spring cleaning is in order.
Comment by Joanne Christian on 24 April 2009 at 8:34 pm:
Four days worth???? I’m about ready for detox.

I don’t think it’s fair that these Republicans get to enjoy Cinco de Mayo after all hatemongering they have encouraged towards Latinos and Mexicans specifically, but at the same time it’s kind of funny. Cinco de Mayo is significant to Mexican-Americans the same way St. Patrick’s Day is a significant to Irish-Americans. Cinco de Mayo is not widely celebrated in Mexico as it is here in the U.S., but neither was St. Patrick’s Day in Ireland. Frank McCourt said of this holiday that it was not a joyous holiday but rather a holy day of obligation when you went to Mass and that was it. Both St. Patrick’s Day and Cinco de Mayo are a way for Mexican-Americans and Irish Americans to take pride in cultural hertiage and share it with others through music, food, and alcohol.
It’s a positive thing. Mexicans in the U.S. maintain some old customs/celebrations and create new ones depending on their location, own family customs, and conscious decisions on whether or not they wish to maintain cultural hertiage in their lives.
Comment by nemski on 5 May 2009 at 11:51 am:
I hope all Delaware Republicans are enjoying their Cinco de Mayo celebrations.
