Young Democrats Movement Comes out Swinging on HB5

Filed in National by on March 31, 2009

Young people get that discrimination based on sexual orientation is a civil rights issue. Check this out:

It is 2009. Yet, in Delaware, gay, lesbian, and transgendered citizens have no legal protection from discrimination in housing, employment, or insurance. That is right; gay and lesbian citizens can be legally fired, denied insurance or housing simply for being gay.

Over the last decade, there have been several attempts to pass non-discrimination legislation. Every year, the bill has passed the House and failed in the Senate. But this year can be different!

You have an opportunity to make history. As you read this, the General Assembly of Delaware is considering House Bill 5, legislation which would end discrimination against gays and lesbians in employment, housing, and insurance.

In accordance with our nation’s constant pursuit of equality and basic civil rights for all, we, the undersigned, passionately urge the State Senate of the State of Delaware to pass HB 5. In addition, we also urge the General Assembly to pass an amendment to this bill in order to protect gender identity.

Me too! And, PDD will be joining with the Young Democrats Movement in a coalition of groups to get this bill on to the Senate Floor for a vote during this session.

After last week’s scary demonstrations over SB27 we need to let our progressive Senators know that we’ve got their backs.

    Civil rights for ALL Americans.
