The 5 Stages.

Filed in National by on March 11, 2009

With many conservatives resorting to treason in forming sleeper cells and advocating violence against the federal government, it occurred to me that Republicans have finally entered the second stage of the greiving process: that of anger.

The stages are:

1. Denial (“I feel fine.”; “This can’t be happening, not to me!)
2. Anger (“Why me? It’s not fair!”; “How can this happen to me!”; “Who is to blame?”; “Lets form terrorist sleeper cells and advocate the overthrow of that which makes me angry”)
3. Bargaining (“Just let me live to see my children graduate.”; “I’ll do anything for a few more years.”; “I will give my life savings if…”)
4. Depression (“I’m so sad, why bother with anything?”; “I’m going to die . . . What’s the point?”; “I miss my loved one, why go on?”)
5. Acceptance (“It’s going to be okay.”; “I can handle it with change”; “I can’t fight it, I may as well prepare for it.”)

The thing is, I doubt very seriously whether Republicans have the intellect, introspection and empathy needed to move past the 2nd state. If they are not angry, they are in denial. If they are not in denial, they are angry. I have never seen a Republican depressed, and I have never seen a Republican bargaining. And since a Republican can never accept something that does not fit within their ideology, they will never accept that, to use Rush Limbaugh’s parlance, they got their political and ideological clocks cleaned by Barack Obama and the Democratic Party, and they, their ideas and their ideology were rejected by the American people in a landslide, and now, five months later, the American people still reject, in even greater numbers, them.

So we are going to see our Republican friends swing between anger and denial for the rest of our lives.

They’ve been angry since October. Remember the McCain/Palin rallies?

  2. Unstable Isotope says:

The way it’s going, I think it will take at least one more cycle of losing before they get to something resembling bargaining. They’re having a hard time accepting that people don’t like their ideas. Right now they’re doubling down on bad ideas.

  3. Delaware Dem says:

Yes, well, it was clear since late September, when McCain pulled that stunt about suspending the campaign, that Obama was going to win big.

Let’s face it – these are people who just can’t stand the thought that they have a black president.

I looked at the meetup site forum for the downstate gathering. There were dozens of people describing the food dishes they were going to bring. I thought I was reading the “White Trash Cookbook”.”

I hope they made plans to donate the extras to the needy in case they don’t get the turnout.

The Loony Left rides again. People getting together to support each other in tough times and plan for a better future is treason. What were all of the Obama meet ups when they were blasting the war right when the nation’s support would have been most appreciated? They were capital P Patriotic of course.

In America, it is still patriotic to disagree with the President. Then Senator Hillary Clinton

  6. Rebecca says:

LBJ said when he signed the Civil Rights laws in 1964 that it was the end of the Democrats in the South.

Reagan picked up on that when he announced his run for the presidency in Mississippi where the Klan killed the black girls at their church.

The Republicans managed to convince white bigots that Democrats were going to take all their money and give it to black people. Because of all this dog-whistling, the Republican party got away with convincing people to vote against their own best interests for the past thirty years.

Thing is, people are finally realizing they’ve been stiffed.

Mostly though, the make up of America has changed. The old white bigots are dying off and the the youth don’t care. Plus, there are a lot more black and brown people than there used to be.

The Republican strategy is dead. They can no longer rule by fear of racial difference.

You are right DD, the ones that are left are just going to cycle through denial and anger until they actually do become extinct. Probably going to take another twenty years but eventually the dog whistles won’t work any more.

And the Revisionist Right is back. No one cares if you criticize the President. We are not calling you traitors and questioning your patriotism the way you did to those who thought the Iraq war was misguided. (People who were quite right, BTW) Making pretend that there isn’t a financial crisis and rooting for the President’s failure and doing your red scare bit and not trying to help get something done is your problem. If you don’t want to be part of the solution, then STFU.

  8. althtnmore says:

Cassandra, the main story called republicans traitors. appearntly LBJ was only partly right, The dems are taking our money and giving it to the blacks….. and the browns…. and the lazy whites…. there being the problem. The Dems want to take what I have and spread it out amoung everyone. Read your constitution, It is illegal to take money from one and give it to another. “A democracy only works until the masses figure out they can vote themselves money. That is why our countries creators created a republic, and not a democracy.

  9. liberalgeek says:

We have been taking money from people and using it for the common good forever. It’s called taxes. We have been taxing income for almost 100 years now. How long do we have to do it for you to recognize it?

  10. xstryker says:

The denial phase lasted 8 years.

  11. a. price says:

people who plot to overthrow a popular government to get their way even though the majority of their country men voted for it are terrorists.

  12. Dana says:

Way wrong. We know that we got beat last November, and are on the outside looking in to prove it. What you don’t seem to understand is that we’re going to fight to reverse that, just like y’all did following 2000, 2002 and 2004.

You seem to think that because Republicans aren’t taking your advice and becoming Democrats Lite, we aren’t serious about trying to win. No, it’s that we know there is no reason for us to win as Democrats Lite.

  13. Unstable Isotope says:

We would be thrilled with Democrat Lite, but I’d settle for Republican Serious. The Republican leaders right now are not serious people who care about governing.

  14. xstryker says:

What you don’t seem to understand is that we’re going to fight to reverse that, just like y’all did following 2000, 2002 and 2004.

I’m confused whether you are talking about organized dissent or organized resistance. There’s a difference. No one here cares whether or not you guys have big rallies. Serious question Dana, if Texas seceded, would you head to Texas? Or would you prefer America?
