Dinner with a lamb

Filed in National by on March 1, 2009

I’m not sure if my father thinks of this stuff up on his own, but normally these ideas of his don’t mushroom out of his own manure. Last night at dinner I got him started (I love to do it) again on politics and his latest for sure statement is

F: “You mark my words, Obama is going to have 3 terms. The messiah is going to keep going. He is going to ruin this country. Oh no, he is going to keep going and ruin this country”

Donviti: “He has been in office for 30 days? What has he done to ruin the country?”

F: “He is undoing all of Bush’s stuff! Everything that he did! It’s ridiculous.”

D: “And that is a bad thing because? How has he ruined the country in 30 days? All of this is his fault?”

F: (pointing to fingers as if counting off) “Pelosi, Reid, Obama they have been ruining the country”

D: “They have only been in power since 2006. With Bush as the President. How are they ruining the country?”

F: “They had the majority in 2006”

This is where the conversation ended and he got really pissed at me. I suggest you use this rebuttal to stymie any more stupidity you hear when people say that the Dem majority caused this problem

D: “How could they cause the problem? Bush is the President. He signs the Bills. What Bill did he VETO that passed and ruined the country? He can say no whenever the hell he wants”

F: “uh, uh, well if you’d let me fini

D: “No, name a bill that he passed that ruined this country? What the Dems push through that he signed that caused this?”

F: “ish, did you read that article I sent you?”

D: “No. I didn’t read the article. Bush has veto power. Line Item veto power, the same thing Clinton had…so since he had Veto Power and Line Item Veto power it ends with him. Period. He can sign anything he likes and not agree to whatever is in the bill. Get rid of it. He didn’t veto anything except SCHIP and that was it”

(I did not mention his signing statements because I was happy with the veto rebuttal)

F: “I’m not going to discuss this with you”

D: “Right, because you are wrong and I’m right”

ahhhhhhh, I love dinner with my pop. The funny thing is, if you could have been a fly on the wall when I was 10 and at my Poppop’s house on Sunday’s this is normal.

2 minutes later:

D: “Did they have a lot of Seafood in the Dominican”

F: “No, but did I tell you that they don’t know how to cook Filet Mignot?”

(and just like that the meal was normal again)

The best part is, we have another dinner tonight at his house. And if I know him, he is ready for round three or four and I will have more for you then!

You are aware that Bush didn’t have line item veto power right? Only President to have it was Bill Clinton for a brief period after which it was ruled unconstitutional.
