The Condescension of Andrew Card.

Filed in National by on February 5, 2009

For the second time in as many weeks, Andrew Card has thrown a little temper tantrum. Last week, he threw a fit on the conservative Michael Medved show. Yesterday, the little peev complained to Bill O’Reilly’s old haunt, Inside Edition:

In an interview scheduled to run Wednesday night, Andrew H. Card Jr. told the syndicated news show Inside Edition that “there should be a dress code of respect” in the White House and that he wished Mr. Obama “would wear a suit coat and tie.”

According to Inside Edition’s Web site, Mr. Card also said:

“The Oval Office symbolizes…the Constitution, the hopes and dreams, and I’m going to say democracy. And when you have a dress code in the Supreme Court and a dress code on the floor of the Senate, floor of the House, I think it’s appropriate to have an expectation that there will be a dress code that respects the office of the President.”

Mr. Card went on to add that, while he would not criticize Mr. Obama for his appearance, “I do expect him to send the message that people who are going to be in the Oval Office should treat the office with the respect that it has earned over history.”

There is such condescension in Mr. Card’s voice and words that, I have to wonder, would Mr. Card have “offered the same advice” to Bill Clinton, if it was Bill Clinton who succeeded Bush. For Clinton also had a more relaxed dress code in the West Wing than Bush did. Yes, I AM saying Card’s remarks sound almost racist. Who the f*ck cares if you take a jacket off while working at your desk? And how does not wearing a jacket while working at your desk offend the Presidency, the Constitution of the United States, Democracy, and hopes and dreams?

For Chrissakes, it is what you do in the Office and not what you wear in the office that matters.

Petulance, thy name is Andrew Card.

He didn’t seem to mind overlooking that Bush had no clothes.

Eff him….hopefully he’ll only have to worry about wearing one kind of digs all day, every day….ifyouknowwhatIamsayin’

    Apparently.

  3. Delaware Dem says:

    LOL. Comment of day.

  4. pandora says:

Damn it, DD! You stole my post!

No worries, I’ll just post it here:

Good Thing We Don’t Have Real Problems…

… Or else calling Andrew Card an idiot would be out of line.

Go on, read that again. The Oval Office symbolizes the Constitution? Is this the same Oval Office the Bush Administration used to condone torture and warrantless wire taps? Oh, Bush wore a suit jacket while doing these things? Guess that makes them A-okay.

And we expected serious input from these people on the Economy?

  5. anon says:

Bank employees are required to wear coats and ties.

    I rest my case.

  6. Delaware Dem says:

Sorry Pandora. I am trying to break an epic writer’s block, and that did it.

  7. h. says:

It was a good post until you threw the ” sounds almost racist” comment in. Wow.

  8. pandora says:

Well, at least it died for a good cause. 😉

  9. Delaware Dem says:

    h–
I am sorry, but it does to me. Andrew Card is behaving like he is horrified that the “blacks are moving into the neighborhood, and they aren’t wearing hats!!!” And he is talking down to the President of the United States, treating him like a son who is going to wreck his father’s car if he drives it.

I doubt very strongly that Andrew Card would ever say “wear your jacket” to a white President.

  10. Unstable Isotope says:

They have nothing else to claim as an accomplishment. The best they can say is that they wore jackets in the oval office, although on one website they found a picture that showed a meeting in the Oval Office and George Tenet was not wearing a jacket.

I think most people like wearing more casual clothes at work. I know a lot of people who used to have to wear a tie at work and they certainly don’t miss those days.

  11. Pragmatist says:

    Apparently!

Too, too funny, I just sprayed my keyboard with soda.

  12. cassandra_m says:

GWB tolerated jacketless disrespect in the Oval too.

Besides, a man with his jacket off and sleeves rolled up looks like a man actually working, yes?

  13. Ann Mack says:

Cheney would tie Bush’s necktie for him every morning and tightened it until Bush did what he wanted. Bush had to wear the jacket to hide the nipple rings Cheney applied to keep him under control. Wouldn’t you much rather have a President with a brain than a bitchin’ wardrobe?

  14. anonone says:

    Ann Mack,

Wouldn’t you much rather have a President with a brain than a bitchin’ wardrobe?

Kinda depends what she looks like. Can’t we have both?

  15. Von Cracker says:

Tennet’s wearing a jacket, Cass. It’s one of those “enhanced” ones….

  16. jason330 says:

    I (heart) decorum.

As I type this I am wearing a shirt, tie, and a twill sport coat.

    Nothing else.
    .
    .

Nothing. I’m as free as the breeze.

Working in Smyrna has its privileges.

  17. Progressive Mom says:

Card’s comments are so condescending and drip with such malice that I’m truly relieved he isn’t criticizing Mr. Obama for his appearance. He would have to go in that “Curious George” direction in order to be more critical of Mr. Obama’s appearance…..

….on the other hand, it’s good to see such a high-ranking member of the previous administration contribute so much weighty material to the national discussion….

  18. he should wear a tie in the oval office

a flight suit when leaving a plane

An apron when serving fake plastic turkey

Dickies when mounting a pile of human remains mixed with concrete rubble

    A hat when clearing brush

Tight biking shorts when taking out heads of state

    what else?

  19. jason330 says:

A smirk when peeing on the Constitution.

  20. jason330 says:

BTW – DV’s was much funnier than mine. I have ot give props. I’m just built that way.

  21. liz says:

Don’t ya just love what the repukes think is patriotic….love of the office. They have been crapping on the Constitution for 8 years, violating rights of everyone, committing unjust, unnecessary wars. The Iraqis are mostly unemployed, “except for the grave diggers”, and they worry about “rolling up your sleeves”.

  22. anon says:

*rummaging around*… where’s my old coat and tie made out of the American flag….

  23. The Senate Floor and House Floor require Coat and Tie why not the Oval Office?

  24. Andy says:

Pin head howmany Senators and Reps take the Jacket off when they arrive at the office and not receiving constituents

  25. Because the Senate FLOOR and House FLOOR are not an office

  26. Mark H says:

“The Senate Floor and House Floor require Coat and Tie why not the Oval Office?”

You ask why not, I ask WHY. In my job, I am generally judged by my network/computer expertise and not by my tie (or lack thereof). If I have a meeting in which I’ll be interfacing with anyone outside of the office I’ll wear dress clothes. IF Obama sucks at being president, will we think better of him because he wore a tie? Didn’t think so.

  27. MJ says:

Andy Card just needs to get over his cheap self. He’s a nobody right now and he’s just trying to stay in the limelight. Andy, your time is over. Please do the country a favor and disappear. Don’t you have a hunting trip with Cheney or something?

  28. Yes, the Senate Floor and the House Floor are an office.

By the way each session opens with a prayer.

  29. Joanne Christian says:

See that jason–you said it yourself, you’re a man of privilege!

  30. Jay Gordon says:

Dress Code? Moral Code? Respect for the office? Why don’t you worry how you will sleep in the future while you watch our counrty down the drain….. the same country that your administration killed with treasonous acts. The office of the President has the same respect as a bathroom, thanks to The Traitor GWBush & family.
