Why change now?

Filed in National by on December 30, 2008

In an effort to “prevent Palestinians from attacking towns in southern Israel” with rockets, Israel today undertook its third day of offensive military airstrikes in the Palestinian territory of Gaza, raising the death toll to more than 300. The Palestinian casualty numbers have been described as the highest over such a brief period since the 1967 Six-Day war. Scores of Israelis have been wounded — and at least one killed — by rocket attacks fired by Palestinians. Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak called the situation “all out war.”

While Bush has been briefed on the situation by Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley,

he has opted not to interrupt his final vacation as president to make a public statement on the crisis.

He is really determined to finish “My Pet Goat.”

  2. June says:

For everyone who says this all-out war is justified because “Israel has a right to defend themselves,” I say Yes, they do, but they should defend themselves the same way they were attacked — not by bombing the living delights out of the Palestinians.

It’s always David and Goliath with the Israelis and Palestinians. And the US helps Goliath. Nothing new there.

That region is a mess and yet another problem the Obama administration will have to deal with. Is there actually any conflict in the world that got better while Bush was president? Heckuva job, Bushie!

  4. pandora says:

These final months will be the ones that paint Bush as Nero. Katrina will be cited as foreshadowing. This blatant, awe-inspiring inaction will be his legacy. He’s even left Iraq, his one big action, to flounder.

  5. h. says:

At least Israel is taking out known military targets rather than shooting rockets at civilians.

  6. David says:

It is not a crisis for the U. S. We need to mind our own business. Israel is fighting one of the most radical and violent organizations in the world. If there is ever to be peace, Hamas must be buried. You should wish them the best.
