This will be treated much like people that don’t mind being spied on if they aren’t doing anything wrong.

What’s the big deal they will ask?  It astounds me the lack of depth a person can have when it comes to understanding Free Will, Freedom in general and what liberties and rights our Constitution was supposed to grant us.

EL PASO — A U.S. Army War College report warns an economic crisis in the United States could lead to massive civil unrest and the need to call on the military to restore order.
Retired Army Lt. Col. Nathan Freir wrote the report “Known Unknowns: Unconventional Strategic Shocks in Defense Strategy Development,” which the Army think tank in Carlisle, Pa., recently released.

“Widespread civil violence inside the United States would force the defense establishment to reorient priorities … to defend basic domestic order and human security,” the report said, in case of “unforeseen economic collapse,” “pervasive public health emergencies,” and “catastrophic natural and human disasters,” among other possible crises.

You guys are only three months late worrying about this, but I’m glad to see you finally got here

  2. no, we aren’t so shove your horn where it doesn’t shine.

Our liberties and rights are not “granted” by the Constitution. They pre-exist it.

The Constitution is (supposed to be) a limitation on the powers of the state in connection with these rights and liberties, and also its consonant obligation to secure them for us.

That which “grants” can also take away. We definitely don’t want any scheme where government purports to “grant” us our (already) innate rights.

This article is not the first rumbling of the possibility of a martial law/police state, nor certainly its anticipation in certain corridors of our government.

It is rather alarming that many people written off as wackos for even suggesting that our government is contemplating such plans or eventualities may in fact have been correct all along. Certainly if this is being released it has been in works for far longer.

    So long posse commitatus.

    God help us.

depends on who you ask I imagine…

It is the natural Republican reponse to mull over how to suppress civil unrest rather than prevent it. See, OBVIOUSLY Republican policies will lead to civil unrest, so from their standpoint, they’d prefer to just return fire on the populace.

The US military and the Attorney General’s office have been working on quasi-legal justifications to undermine posse comitatus since the mid-1990s….

Which also means that the current plans are not strictly speaking GOP brainchildren. In fact, they come in large measure at the behest of SecDef Gates who will–oh, yeah–be continuing in the same position in the new administration.

Go check and see how many Democrats since 1985 have provided yes votes to employ the US military domestically in the war on drugs or the war on brown people without papers.

I’ll grant you this is a GOP-only issue on the day that President Barack Obama issues an Executive Order forbidding the use of Federal troops in any other cases besides Constitutionally defined insurrection.

Until then, your post is pretty much Dem talking points without any facts….

  7. TPN says:

Seriously, X…get serious. This is (or should be) so far beyond cheap partisanship for all of us.

Any responsible federal official who exercises their duty, at whatever level they operate, to pre-emptively smack down any such martial law contingencies, even just prospectively (as Steve alluded Obama could do as of 1/20/09) is a patriot worthy of praise for living up to the bare minimum of their constitutional oath.

Those who don’t do so deserve no free pass for party affiliation, one way or the other, and are enormously suspect in fundamental ways…at least if you believe in what donviti says it at stake here….and I do.
