Comment Rescue: El Somnambulo will only say this once

Filed in National by on December 24, 2008

Maybe we can excommunicate people who refuse to repent in big public ceremonies?

He is really getting sick and tired of serious threads (and this is one) being hijacked by local locos with personal scores to settle.

If this site is to realize its potential, then the powers-that-be would do well to find a way to resolve and eliminate the unreadable white noise that appears here far too often.

No, El Somnambulo does not want to act as a censor. But he believes that he is far from the only one who shares this frustration.

I guess I tune out the white noise too easily. We’ll have to take a serious look at fixing this in 2009.

He is really getting sick and tired of serious threads (and this is one) being hijacked by local locos with personal scores to settle.

Well, sure – if you don’t transmit any meaningful signal on a channel, what’s left is white noise.

The blogosphere has left a vacuum on this topic which is unfortunately being filled by Liz and Nancy. I have yet to hear any serious analysis by our esteemed bloggers of the situation in question.

Our front-page bloggers who have commented, are worse than Liz and Nancy in jumping to a conclusion, and their failure to do due diligence on the documents and individuals at hand.

And any non-participant who dares comment is accused of being part of one faction or another.

What we need is somebody like Tommywonk to objectively take us through a timeline and walk us through the current situation based on the actual facts. Not that I would wish that on Tommy.

How about putting some signal on that channel, instead of complaining about the white noise?

  2. El Somnambulo says:

Allow El Somnambulo to clarify. He is not singling out Liz/Nancy, although their sniping on the original thread finally motivated his post.

He has been guilty at times as well, most notably in his sniping at El Burrito Junior. Although he’s decided that shooting fish in a barrel simply isn’t sporting anymore.

He first thought about a post like this the other day when he wanted to post on an interesting thread, probably the 6th District election, only to see that the thread had already been hijacked. At that point,he saw little point in posting as the original topic had been rendered inoperative.

Maybe the solution is to require that people stay ‘on point’ on the topics. This is not the only blog with these issues, and they are not easy to work through.

Maybe the bosses can have an ongoing “Jane, You Ignorant Slut” blog reserved exclusively for personal insults.

And while the Beast Who Slumbers agrees w/anon that sometimes the threads themselves encourage mindless responses, people can skip those threads if they like.

But there ARE enough meaty threads worthy of comment, and it’s those threads that lately have been rendered unreadable. That is what El Somnambulo would like to see corrected.

  3. nemski says:

I think the choice is clear, fix it or let Mike W back in.

  4. anon says:

At that point,he saw little point in posting as the original topic had been rendered inoperative.

Don’t worry El, your fans will find your comments no matter what.

  5. anon says:

It would be reasonable for one of the principals to drop in once in a while with a reminder to stay on topic. Maybe with an occasional time-out or a closing of comments to show you mean business. That is probably all that is needed.

  6. R Smitty says:

To take more of the El Som’s idea and blend it with anon #5, I think the contributors should just create a widget titled, “Jane, You Ignorant Slut (or Joe, you ignorant ass…bastard…fuckstick, etc.)” and list in there the names/handles of those who wantonly jack the threads. I do say “wantonly” because sometimes there are constructive jackings to draw attention to something important.

Back to the Ignorant slut…fuckstick widget, the names get placed there upon their timeout.

  7. Lee Ann (aka Minner Crony) says:

I’m a newbie and haven’t earned the right to complain yet, but I do feel that attempts to offer serious comments, especially on state issues, are quickly washed out by vats of vitriol. And it ain’t just Nancy and Liz. On the other hand, I gave a comment on another Delaware blog and it took three days to post my comment because the moderator was out of town. So at least this one is alive and kickin’.

  8. jason330 says:

So at least this one is alive and kickin’.

    Woo hoo!!

In your face unknown other Delaware blog!

  9. R Smitty says:

Hmm…I wonder what that other blog is…hopefully not the one I am moderator of! 😯

If it is, please accept my aplogies, oh cronious one. I really have not been paying it the mind that I should be and have left it up to the other contributors. OK, plus I have found that commenting is far more fun than posting.

On a completely note, I do have a question for you. If it was awkward and uncomfortable to be Ruthie’s cronie and be put into that current position you are in, why did you then say yes to the placement?

  10. jason330 says:

    El Som,

You El Man! However… when threads get hijacked they may or may not meander back to the point. The good, on target comments shine through.

If we did a “Jane You ignorant Slut!” standing post, how long before everyone tuned me out as I catalog the ways in which Dave Burris is a silver spoon sucking flatulent ass who’s points are as fallacious as they are shallow and thoughtless.

    Not very long I imagine.

    (Aside from Smitty)

  11. Jason, do ya mind linking to the original post El referenced?

Lee Ann, hmmmm. What I am not saying about what I know about you could probably fill more than a few vats.
    πŸ™‚

  12. Lee Ann (aka Minner Crony) says:

    Dear R Smitty,
Don’t believe everything you read on blogs or even in, gasp, the News Journal. I wasn’t “placed.” Not every appointee is, by definition, a “crony.” The position was vacant, it was reclassified to meet a need of the department, the reclass was approved by the Office of Management and Budget, it was posted, I applied for it and I qualified for it along with several other people. Then there was a lull of 5-6 months when positions weren’t being filled. Then we were interviewed. Then I supplied references. Then I was offered the job. The whole process took over a year. Hard to make the case for a dumping when I also happen to have the experience and professional credentials for the job. I am not “awkward” or “uncomfortable” at all, but I do love my job (for the first time in quite awhile).

    p.s. It wasn’t your blog.

  13. Lee Ann (aka Minner Crony) says:

p.s. Nancy, You don’t know anything about me so don’t be a tease. I don’t think I have ever even met you. And by engaging with you, I am doing exactly what I complained about earlier. So zip it. Zip it. Zip. Zip. Zip.

  14. X Stryker says:

I’ve got the solution. Post open threads. That way, when meaningful threads get hijacked, we can insist threadjackers take the fight to the open thread or risk having their comments deleted. Simple.

  15. R Smitty says:

Like Jason offered a while back, I too would be willing to let your side of the story flow. I’d imagine, though, that Jason will have the fast track to that, which I also don’t mind. While Jason is a conniving, psychotically hysterical, pathological, lemming-ish, lap-dog liberal, I still very much respect the dude. Plus, he and I, we’d probably accomplish the same thing, so no need being redundant.

    Thanks for responding, btw.

  16. Lee Ann (aka Minner Crony) says:

Sure, I don’t mind responding to sincere questions from non-anonymous folks.

  17. R Smitty says:

Hah! I bet you didn’t know R Smitty was code for Ron Williams, did you?

Kidding, it’s code for Celia Cohen. 😯

Ha. Seriously, it’s code for Blogomachismo Whacko Mac Daddio.

  18. ah, yes, Lee Ann. You didn’t meet me the day we would have met because you and a Carper honcho attended a June meeting (2005?) of the Southern NCC Alliance INCOGNITO by your own admission. Heh.
SNCCA had just managed to successfully FOIA Nathan Hayward’s records on the Pam Scott-Paul Clarky-Jay Sonecha-RuthAnnMinner-geez who else should get thrown in here?- public private partnership Bayberry Infrastructure Agreement of April 2004.
The document that took a good bit of doing to unearth and that the general public still has little understanding of its magnitude of promise of public expenditures that are coming for the roads and sewers being ‘given away’ to Mr. Sonecha. It was widely believed that your boss and Carper clone, Minner, got a quid pro quo for the tens of thousands in dollar bills that Sonecha tossed to her suffering 2004 campaign against Bill Lee.
We figured that that was why you were in the room that evening when the SNCCA delivered their FOIA to Tom Wagner, guest speaker, with a request for him to audit DelDOT for using their congested corridor acquisition cash to buy the Garrison Lake Golf Course from Sonecha a mere 10 days before the ink was bled on the 100 – 20o millions of public money now legally bound for the City of Bayberry infrastructure – without public oversight, mind you, as per the way Roger Roy wrote the public-private partnership bill enacted after midnight one June 30th in the mid-nineties.
    πŸ™‚
Plenty more where that vat is stored.

  19. thanks Jason. by the way, I stayed on topic. What I said was that Sec.-nominee Landgraf’s husband had a bio a mile long. No judgement. Just information.
Didn’t anyone else google Kurt Landgraf yesterday?
    Interesting guy.

Lizzy-whacko was the one to change the topic. But muzzle away, it won’t be the first or last time this blog shows a mobish mentality.

  20. To add, I have been pretty much laying off of Lee Ann because she will be an advocate of Livable Delaware tenets. What she forgets is the string of emails we shared earlier in the year about comments I made over on Burris’ blog.
So, no, never met but I have a few choice emails in the queue from Ms. Walling.

  21. Lee Ann (aka Minner Crony) says:

    Must . . . resist . . . engaging . . . crazy . . . lady.

Oh, what the heck. My, we have a long memory, don’t we? I think you spent too much time with the Band of Conspiracy Theorists from Below the Canal. I vaguely remember that meeting, but I can’t remember why I was there. But calling my ex-boss a “Carper clone” shows that you really don’t know the score. That’s a real lol. Hey, I spoke Blog!

  22. Lee Ann (aka Minner Crony) says:

Oh, I remember, where youdeclared I absolutely did not support Jack Markell when I had spoken at an event for him (at his request) the night before. Sorry, El Som, we’re proving you right.

  23. Lee Ann,

Are you Lee Ann Walling? If so, I commend you for commenting here! Well, commenting in general, anyway.

  24. R Smitty says:

Er…Lee Ann…if you are referring to SNCCA as a Band of Conspiracy Theorists from Below the Canal, I would strongly suggest to give that a second thought. I don’t know what went down in ’05, but I can tell you today that SNCCA is a fine organization undeserving of that label.

  25. Lee Ann (aka Minner Crony) says:

Hi Mike, Yes it’s really me. Decided if you can’t beat ’em, join ’em.

No, I am not talking about that organization, per se, as I actually referred Joan Deaver to that group and LeAnn (no relation) Ferguson a few years ago. Sussex needs a version of SNCCA badly!

Just some individuals who may or may not belong to that group.

  26. R Smitty says:

Oh, I do know of one who made a horrible habit of insulting every guest LeAnn and Chuck would bring to speak. I can’t recall his name, but I do certainly know the face. That particular angry fellow is no longer with the group.

BTW, I would say Joan has done quite well since!

  27. Lee Ann (aka Minner Crony) says:

    I voted for her.

  28. R Smitty says:

I am in SoNCCo, so I could only endorse her. My first choice was Jud, but we all know how that primary turned out and I quickly vocalized support for Joan, both on the blog and on DTR.

  29. Lee Ann (aka Minner Crony) says:

I actually supported Jud, also, because I figured the Rs would have the majority and he would be very aggressive on land use. I hope Joan is not a voice in the wilderness down here.

  30. Lee Ann (aka Minner Crony) says:

RSmitty, Would the insulting fellow happen to have red hair and a beard?

  31. Sorry Lee Ann, but you are late to the party.

In most Delaware Circles I’m one of the more respected in the crowd but here…not so much… When you ask Leann and Joan about me, don’t be SHOCKED!

You are about as big of DE Wayer as there can be in this state, take that as you like. And may I compliment you on how cleverly you performed in your most recent maneouvering-job wise. πŸ™‚ I hope the red-bearded one comes and takes a big BITE out of your sail!

  32. Lee Ann (aka Minner Crony) says:

As I said, you know nothing about me. But you are starting to give me the heebie-jeebies.

  33. R Smitty says:

No, actually. I just happened to meet this person for the first time this year, but I was back-filled on the story quite quickly. He was (at least now, I have no idea about how he was in ’05) an older man (prob about 60-65), no beard and grey-white hair. Bitter and sarcastic over just about everything he put his eyes on…everything.

  34. uh, oooohhhh, more off thread comments:
    Lee Ann,
One of the more powerful memes around here is the need to open up Delaware government.

When (and if) that happens, most of the environment, that you had a front row seat for, will have faltered: public interests coming only after the string of connected favors are meted out.

What I know about you? You are a public figure dear. Your committee assignements etc, minutes, are a part of the public record.

  35. cassandra m says:

Hello Lee Ann — in the spirit of helping out a blog newbie, you can feel free to ignore both the self-importance and the threats of Nancy Willing. She is disturbed over her reception here because we’ve all figured out how impotent she is.

Pace to the revered El Som, but Lee Ann should know that there are folks here she can ignore in spite of those folks’ highly inflated views of themselves.

  36. cAss, how sweet of you!
impotent? oh boy, ask RSmitty or Geek about developers and DE government if you wish to ignore me.

  37. Lee Ann says:

cassandra, Thanks for helping a sister out. I am going to go scrub my toilet now. Truly.

  38. cassandra_m says:

    That’s the thing.

I have been asking around — not LG or Smitty, but some of the folks involved. Your name gets mentioned and belly laughs are pretty much the universal reaction.

So no worries, Lee Ann. Ignore away.

  39. El Somnambulo’s name is to long
To put into a decent song
    So I will just say
    Have a nice day
Even though the libs here are all wrong

  40. I’ve seen other sites get their mammary glands in a wringer because of off-topic comments and “thread-jacking,” but I don’t take it too seriously. If a comment is off-topic and no one is interested, then it’ll get ignored and the other comments will stay on topic. It’s a very slight waste of bandwidth, but basically harmless.

On the other hand, if a comment is off-topic, but people follow the direction of the off-topic comment, then that indicates a desire to discuss that topic. I don’t see that as harmful.

  41. Joanne Christian says:

Well Lee Ann AKA Minner Crony,

Welcome out!!! They beat everyone up around here, so make yourself at home (even though it’s not my place), and wait your turn. I came for a visit within the past year, and haven’t left yet. I asked Geek if he wanted me to pay rent–and those darn liberals, they’re so inclusive, they told me it’s free for everyone. Wow, if that’s what the next administration does, I’m staying. Also, they are great about blog tutorials–why just a few weeks ago Cass and Pandora did a “call and response” to me to make sure I was understanding “tin foil hat”, when it was presented. Now where else could a girl go to get that kind of direction and understanding?
Hope you continue to come out, and offer your very real world insight of “that inner sanctum”.
I know everyone’s a critic…..and by the way, I think Governor Minner looks so much softer, and kinder up close.

  42. Lee Ann (aka Minner Crony) says:

Joanne, I am back from cleaning my bathroom (and a nap). Thanks for the welcome. As I told Jason, you are my role model for non-anonymous civil discourse. I figured if you could roam around here relatively unmolested, kind of like a wise and tolerant dorm mom, maybe I could have some fun too. Thanks for the kind words — as I also told Jason, I won’t be an apologist for the last few years although I have a few things to say. On or about Jnuary 20.
And I don’t have a clue what “tin foil hat” is.

  43. JohnnyX says:

  44. Lee Ann (aka Minner Crony) says:

Ah-haaaa. Thanks. Who says blogging on Christmas Eve is a mindless waste of precious time?

  45. Unstable Isotope says:

When El Som speaks, everyone listens. I agree that some threads become unreadable sometimes, but I generally just ignore them.

  46. why just a few weeks ago Cass and Pandora did a β€œcall and response” to me

    *
    huh…

    they called you at home?

  47. Joanne Christian says:

No Ma’m, It was right here on the world wide web…thru the miracle of blogging, they answered a question, and then lo and behold in a later post they made sure thru the use of parentheses, an example of aforementioned question. Now wasn’t that nice?

  48. Joanne Christian says:

Lee Ann (aka Minner Crony)–Thanks for the very kind words. Will you be going to the Inaugural Ball? I bet they would have a very special seat for you as a “Minner Crony”. You may not want to miss this chance–and it is after the 20th.

On another note..”wise and tolerant dorm mom”, really gave me a chuckle. It’s like Animal House or the Harad Experiment at times–no dorm mom wanted. They are the tolerant ones; and have yet to ban me on THEIR blog.

  49. Lee Ann (aka Minner crony) says:

Hey Joanne, I have been thinking about going and wearing a shirt that says “Minner Crony” on one side and “Progressive Policy Wonk” on the other. Or is it black tie?
