Deep (or not so deep) Thought on the Economy

Filed in National by on December 20, 2008

It seems that things I need, like food, water, electricity, oil, and healthcare, are costing a lot more than things I want, like cashmere, televisions, computers, and shoes.  Talk about a financial slippery slope!  You’ll be happy to know I’ve shown remarkable restraint… well, except for those fabulous Steve Madden black pumps for 70% off.

    Can you throw them?

  2. pandora says:

Yup, and do serious damage. 5″ heels!

  3. Shoe Throwing Instructor says:

The price of thing you need is taking away your disposable income needed to by the things you want, that`s why we are where where are and you are not going to like were we are going.

Do they come with a back brace and a DVD on how to do that runway stroll with them? Maybe you should rename yourself PoshPandora.

  5. Santa says:

So is little Pandora asking to take the Coach Pocketbook of her letter to Santa?

Are you trying to cut expenses. My husband and I are going through the same exercise and it’s kind of surprising the things neither of us want to go without…but are not necessary, like high speed internet access.

  7. Dana says:

Well, yeah, of course. The demand for luxury goods is elastic; you can choose not to buy, while, in the end, you can’t choose not to buy necessities.

I’ve never seen sale prices like this. 120.00 shoes reduced to 30.00, 170.00 cashmere sweaters reduced to 49.00, everything in an entire store 50% off. These price cuts are beyond drastic… they’re scary.

I wonder how many retailers will close their doors for good after the holidays? I’m also wondering if those gift certificates I purchased as gifts (Borders and Game Stop) will be worth the paper they’re written on by the time the recipients use them…

  9. Unstable Isotope says:

I’m a bit afraid of gift certificates this year. You can tell that things just aren’t moving right now. They’re slashing prices to move their inventory.
