This would be a great time for a joint UN Naval taskforce. Honestly, what else are the navies of the world good for? We need to create safe international shipping lanes through the Gulf of Aden and across the Indian Ocean.

I’d like to know how the pirates pulled this off. Did they use cannons and say Arrgh? 😉

Another bunch of pirates still has that boatload of Russian T-72 tanks they jacked in September. They are holding them someplace and that is still not resolved. Something is up.

DV, Nemski and I have a Turkish friend who said the gov’t in Ankara is preparing Turkish Navy response to this. Apparently it has been very bad over the last month or so.

The craziest part is the most successful crews are doing this shit with little-ass skiffs and automatic weapons. Not a lotta options in Somalia, though. It’s about the poorest country in the world, there hasn’t been a central gov’t for a dozen years. It’s basically a couple million desperately poor people and a handful of warlords trying to hit up al-Qaeda on their stolen satellite phones. Bad situation.

I honestly believe that Bush could have made a better case for going into Somalia over Iraq, if everyone had been straight-up about the whole WMD biznass. He might have even gotten a little more int’l support, particularly from bordering countries in Africa.

Bush did go into Somalia, sort of, but just for raids and not to stay.

Lack of oil was the culprit.

This looks like a DIY bailout to me — and they’re giving plenty of folks some ideas on how to survive the global recession.
