...but RSmitty, can we go ahead and start the RetroRepublicans? or the Real(ity)Republicans?

I started to lay down the gauntlet today, JC, but, as Geek noticed on the way back to M-town, I have this odd habit of not getting the words out when the rant is at its peak.

If you are interested, there will be a gathering of local minds in the near future.

Two observatoins from this observer...

(1) It's worth noting the districts where Lee won: western and southern Sussex County, right where the GOP's legislative candidates won by sizeable majorities - look at Dave Wilson, Biff Lee, Dan Short and Gerald Hocker (hold the jokes).

Biff Lee's opponent, Barb Hudson, revealed some cracks in the Laurel/Delmar areas - she entered the race late but had a strong showing. If Markell wants to cement the Democrats' lead, he needs to work with the local party structure, using some of his money to lay the groundwork and get candidates started early on 2010 - like tomorrow. If they pick up even one of those solid red seats, it'll be huge.

(2) The GOP's bench also includes party vice-chairman Vance Phillips, who (according to today's NJ) is likely to become the new Sussex County council president, and probably positioning himself to run for governor in 2012 or Congress when Castle steps down in 2010. He's in the capital-c Conservative crowd.

And one intriguing thought, though probably a non-starter: Do you think Markell would reach out to Republicans by naming Brady the interim state treasurer?

Joanne: All but Lavelle are too old to go any higher.

DelDem: Go ahead and laugh. I doubt I'll be around to cash out, but I'll put my money on him vs. the Democratic field for 2016.

PS: You're quite wrong about my political leanings.

It sort of looks like the DE GOP’s bench is O’Donnell, Clatworthy, Copeland and Brady.

... and they're STILL not ready for Burris.

Geezer...damn right I am ridiculing him. He is your A-list star. The only hope for the Party. The future!!! Your nominee for Governor in 2012. And he only ran 2,000 votes better than a D-lister.

Well, there better be a re-evaluation of the party and it's ideology, because some huge sacrifices have been offered up, that were or would have been phenomenal public servants. If the work that needs to get done is impeded by perception--than there is a heck of a job to do with perception. And I'm meaning both real, and fanatical. It better be an evolution revolution of the GOP, and where it sits, it sits. This is greater, public policy, legislation, and responsibility.Personal, and social issues have a disproportionate banner to some, incredible Republican ideals, and governance. It's time to ballast the distractions--off to their own little parlors and parties, that they can form, and back to their churches, where they can congregationally decide--and quit mucking up the progress, and protection that needs to be made as a country. I only signed on to be a Republican. I did not agree to the evangelical, pro-lifer, war monger, corporate pardoning, fiscal philandering, and economic stimulus check that came with it. I can only be patient for so long, this walking wounded status needs trajectory with talent, not a makeover with morals and minutiae. You may be the Progressive Democrats, but RSmitty, can we go ahead and start the RetroRepublicans? or the Real(ity)Republicans?

"I think the most embarassing stat for Copeland is that he ran only 3.4 percent better than O’Donnell."

And O'Donnell ran fewer than 6,000 votes behind KHN. Copeland got clobbered, all right, but the GOP will find their solace in the way he outperformed Lee.

Should Castle retire -- his call, really -- my guess is Copeland, who will just be biding time until running against Markell in 2012 (which he will lose, but it will set him up well for 2016).

Your own comparison shows the foolishness of your claims. Copeland outperformed Lee by about 23,000 votes. KHN underperformed Markell by 120,000. "Just slightly more votes than KHN" is an indictment of KHN, not Copeland.
