UPDATE: Election Day Tales — Mid-Day

Filed in Delaware by on November 4, 2008

More tales from polling places and campaign offices should be posted here. What are you seeing and hearing? And if you’ve been working this morning, tell us what it has been like working this historic GOTV effort.

If you have pictures (or very short video) send that to me or Pandora or nemski and we’ll get it up.

Liberalgeek has reported from a reliable source that East Dover Elementary School polling place has had some issues with machines — pressing the button for the D candidate registers for the R candidate. This seems unusual for Delaware, but what else is going on?

Donviti is doing poll greeting fo Markell and he is stuck with a few Clatworthy voters who don’t seem to be on this planet. DV reports that they’ve spent almost an hour and a half just going around and around over Obama being a Marxist; Obama being a socialist; Obama being in favor of open voting for organizing and the usual raft of wingnut stuff. Worse, DV reports that these folks aren’t even from here. DV is up at Shipley Manor on Shipley road if you want to have your way with some Clatworthy wingnuts today!

It just started to RAIN in North Wilmington! UGH I’m going to volunteer for 4 hours too! damn

  2. pandora says:

Rain in the city as well. Cars are still pulling up and there’s A LOT of umbrellas!!

  3. jason330 says:

Just spoke to my buddy Loudell in Wilmington and he will soon air a interview with a straight Dem voter. (excpt for KHN)

He says he is hearing a lot of straight dems.

  4. Unstable Isotope says:

I voted straight Dem except for Paul Clark. I even voted for the Karens. Oberle has to be pretty freaked out about the possibility of a lot of straight ticket voters because he sent out at least two anti-Basara mailers here in the 24th. I’m phonebanking now, and I’ve spent a lot of time on wrong numbers and talking to voice mail. I’ve talked to some Obama/Biden voters. They seem psyched!

  5. Call It says:

I’ve been to 3 polling stations in sussex so far. Two out by Long Neck and then to my district’s (38th) in Bethany. The two long neck polling stations were heavily manned with Republicans, nary a democrat at either one (except for a markell supporter at each). Mike Castle was at both sites. The Bethany polling station was manned heavily with Hocker supporters, and a few Kay Ryan supporters, including my mom.

    Here’s how I voted:
    Obama/Biden
    Biden
    Castle
    Markell
    Copeland
    Brady
    Kay Ryan (38th)
Greg Fuller (Clerk of the Peace)

  6. Joanne Christian says:

Dover High School–One woman “over the top”, about not having the provisional vote..”the attorneys on standby…etc”,was talked down..an oversight, Board of Elections bringin’ the right paperwork, on their way, only applies to top ticket, simple human error, much to set up overnight….
    You guys know her?

  7. delawaredem says:

Call It, my mom is also a poll worker down there. She is a “Striker.” I foget which location but she is in Hocker’s district.

  8. delawaredem says:

Joanne… I have no idea who you are talking about but that woman is well within her rights to scream at the top of her lungs if she is denied the right to vote.

I don’t care if it is human error. A right is being deprived and, as an attorney, I would raise holy hell if someone told me I could not vote.

  9. Dorian Gray says:

I agree with DD. Don’t take a provisional. Throw a god damn hissy fit to get in the booth. As DD said earlier, people died so you could do this.

On the voting topic, my wife and I were discussing whether ID would be required. I said it should not be but she thought it was. Well , were asked for ID but I asked the woman what the procedure is if I didn’t have it. Happily you simply swear out an oath and sign an affidavit and vote in the booth, no provisional.

  10. cassandra_m says:

I voted in the City abit after noon — there were no lines, but there was a steady stream of voters keeping the machines occupied. The ladies manning the place said that early there were very big lines and they are expecting another rush around 5 or so. All of the poll workers were really happy — they were clear that turnout was just going to be historic.

  11. Unstable Isotope says:

I’m here at Biden HQ and they place is buzzing! Every available phone is taken and it’s very busy right now.

  12. Liz says:

What is Ludell talking about. Not in the City in fact Karen was told to get out of the city and go to Kent County. I was out at those polls all morning and KHN is heavily supported…too bad Luddel/Jenson trying to persuade voters that KHN is not running neck and neck with Castle. Karen is heavily supported by democrats in Sussex along with a lot of republicans. Notice Jason et al you didnt state who you voted for in the Congressional race…want to clear that up.

  13. NAncy Willing says:

Well, now Manlove won’t be so fucking snide. She gets really nasty (I have the emails) when people question anything about problem polling operations.

I first started to mistrust this commish when down in leg hall on the night of the possible vote on the anti-fusion bill. I asked her what she thought of it and she claimed that ‘as a true democrat, she was against it”.

Say what you will, I don’t like that attitude. I imagine that she is grateful that I haven’t published the emails I got from her after the primary. Tempting though.

  14. NAncy Willing says:

UI – I also refused to vote for Clark nor Coons. Besides that, this is the first straight DEM in a while for me.

  15. Call It says:

DD… good to hear your mom is out and about. What a crappy day out though!

  16. Liz says:

Manlove on WILM said they did’nt think there would any problems in Delaware today. However, several people called in to say they were told they “must” present photo ID which Manlove stated on the air wasn’t necessary. Many elderly don’t have license and brought their Polling Card which wasnt accepted everywhere. Appears the election office didnt send the memo to all poll workers–its almost like the poll workers are doing what they want. A democrat from Greenville called to say they wouldnt let him vote until he showed a photo ID and a woman at PS said, “they were asking for photo Id’s inside and she spoke with someone from the AG’s office who was inside for complaints”. Once it went out on the airwaves that a photo was necessary how many elderly just stayed home?

  17. meatball says:

Just back. Split the ticket locally. My daughter (10) pushed all the buttons for the candidates we had talked about for weeks. After she pushed the vote button and came out from behind the curtain, she asked the young poll worker assisting us if she could vote again.

In and out in minutes at Zoar church on the cusp of the 41st (Atkins district).

  18. smyrnadudette says:

Was a greeter at Smyrna Middle School for 3 hours – no republican greeters!!!!!!!! There were TONS of voters – yea!

  19. observer says:

Heavy McCain turnout in western Sussex.

Lot of down-ticket-splitting for local cands.

  20. Nancy Willing says:

I forgot that I voted for Sorenson. Oops. One R for good measure.

  21. anon says:

Voted at McKean HS at about 4:30 in a very light rain. A steady trickle of voters but no lines. Lots more cars were coming as I was leaving. Charlie Copeland’s wife was the only greeter. All the Dem poll clerks were very young, all the Repubs older. I think it is a new law that lets 16-17 year olds be pollworkers.

  22. Sheee-it. I coulda told ya that western sussex would go for mccain…

I have spoken with two staunch republicans that were 1) upset with the choice of mccain and 2) more pissed off with the choice of palin… and they voted for obama, then straight ticket republican the rest of the way.
