The Who Rocked Philly Tonight

Filed in Arts and Entertainment by on October 27, 2008

They kicked it off with “Can’t Explain” and just went on to rip it up for two solid hours. The set was unapologietically retro without being nostalgic. Every song had an immediacy. It never felt like…”oh we’ll have to play this, so let’s just get through it.”

“My Generation” had an interesting twist. After comlpetely rocking the whole song it descended into a very raw jam and Townsend appended these lyrics to the 60’s anthem:

“This is an apology…
sorry we fucked it all up
sorry we fucked it all up
sorry we fucked it all up”

Pete Townsend was always my favorite rocker of that era and seeing him live for the first time I remembered what I liked so much about him. Smart. No bullshit. Talented out the wazoo.

Pino Palladino played bass and Zak Starkey (yes Ringo’s son) played drums. They were both good but this iteration of the band is all about Townsend and Daltrey. And why not? They still kick ass in no uncertain terms.

In spite of the Eagles and Phillies games, parking and traffic was not a problem. The spirit of Keith Moon watched over us.

Dude…I would have so totally gone with you (and bought a ticket, too). I thought you were more from the Leo Sawyer crowd. Damn. Who knew?

Next time an AARP tour comes to town I’ll call you.

Funny…I thought the same thing. I used to see Skynyrd each time they came to the State Fair. Of course, I guess they were younger than The Who. Well…two of The Who, anyway.

A sombering thought came via the Phillies game last night. Joe Suck (typo intended) pointed out that Jamie Moyer is as old as The Who has been a band. Wanting to prove Joe Suck wrong, I found out he was right! DAMN! 45 freaking years. That really is awesome as a rock band.
