Katz v Clatworthy: Round 2

Filed in Delaware by on October 21, 2008

Dr. Mike Katz squared off against John Clatworthy last night at Hockessin Memorial Hall. As reported by The News Journal the debate between Katz and his opponent focused on Clatworthy’s negative ad.

State spending, education and experience in small businesses were the main topics for candidates competing for the 4th District: Republican John Clatworthy and Democrat Mike Katz. They are vying for the seat Copeland vacated by opting not to run for re-election.

Katz responded to accusations made via campaign brochures that claimed he was going to raise spending and taxes, saying they were an example of negative campaign tactics by Clatworthy.

“Unfortunately, John has chosen to run a very negative campaign,” Katz said. “This is what’s wrong with politics. John spent $30,000 going negative on me and sending not true, false information to our community. It’s scare politics and scare tactics.”

Clatworthy said Katz had completed a survey and indicated he wanted to increase spending in several segments of government including education. Clatworthy said because of the growth of government, the state cannot tolerate increases in any sector.

“With a $200 million shortfall, you can’t greatly increase spending,” Clatworthy said.

Katz said Clatworthy is misrepresenting his positions and that he wants to increase efficiency in order to reroute money to needed programs and in turn reduce taxes for residents.

Interestingly enough, Clatworthy is criticizing Dr. Mike Katz’s response to Project Vote Smart, when Clatworthy did not respond to their Political Courage Test. What do they call it when some lacks “courage”? Any ideas, John?

Katz summarizes his answers as thus:

  • Cut Government Waste
  • Reduce our tax burden
  • Invest in small business
  • Reduce Healthcare costs
  • Strengthen our schools

The benefit of living in a politically split house (mother-in-law is a Republican and the wife is a Libertarian), Clatworthy’s negative ad was delivered to my doorstep. The front of the ad makes little mention of John Clatworthy (the return address only) and less than 20% of the total ad mentions the paying candidate. There is the nice grainy black and white picture of the Democratic candidate stating that he is wrong. But most surprising of all, on one line of the ad that happens to be in bright yellow, mentions Clatworthy’s opponent with the word “Killing” twice.

Classy, John, classy.

Will the voters of the 4th Senate District buy into John Clatworthy’s negative ad? Or, will the voters repudiate such nonsense?

Mike Katz. Killing Kittens…Killing Apple Pie.

    Bloodthirsty freak!

Split? that’s barely a hairline fracture.

    anon, but I’m a Democrat!

OK… I’ll finish that pot of coffee now.

    Cheese and crackers!

John Clatworthy may resemble one of the Osmonds but John knows the issues in education and business!

Many comments here are based on opinions of a person they never met or a person who never served in pubic office! I watched John Clatworthy interact countless hours up hours with others. John has more decency then entire Republican Party. John tends to bring bickering people together by finding common ground. John stepped down as regional chair after Lee lost the last election. Maybe he felt a sense of personal failure but the real failure was stepping down! They guy after him lit the dam match that started the crack in the party!

We all talk about the lack of morals in Dover and yet here is a guy that will bring it.
Sure he drank a little too much of the GOP Kool-aid but he knows dam well he needs not to follow tracks of others.

The democrats have run Delaware for the last 16 years and take a hard look around! The Republicans are too busy playing three year olds in the sand box and can’t play nice.

OK ! what does WDEL and WHHY polls say about this race ?

Katz is for the small business boning their employee with small pay and sticking them up the ass with large Employee healthcare contributions. Delaware needs real jobs with real pay and benefits! Why push world class education at the same time local mom and pop business? Why focus on building Fix A Flat shops and not build the entire car factories?

Look at the “solutions” Son of Clatworthy offers on that mailer:

    “Oppose tax hikes
    Cap government spending”

So far, that’s two entirely doctrinaire positions — ones that, as a minority senator, he can do exactly nothing about and that, in the current economy, are fiscally irresponsible. If his bank was losing money, would he insist on not raising fees and penalties?

“Attract jobs in alternative energy, biotech and hi-tech.”

A position taken so far by every single candidate, D and R, for General Assembly.

Beyond that, I believe banking interests are quite well represented in the General Assembly. Medicine, not so much.

    nemski’s wife a libertarian?

I knew there was a reason he often sounded more rational than…

oh, well, what the hell, nemski–my wife’s a liberal Democrat, so I guess that makes us even….

Really? I have to meet a man to have an opinion of him? I have to have served in public office to have an opinion about politics?

    That’s just absurd.

  9. Geezer says:

In what sense is Son of Clatworthy a “businessman”? I thought he worked for WSFS.

Certainly not re: politics! But personal characterization how do you judge that!
    See above.

  11. nemski says:

Kilroy, personal characterization. I’m not attacking Clatworthy, I’d just like some answers.

    1. You’ve totally ignored Clatworthy’s attack ad, which this post was based on. Is this the direction we want Delaware to move in?

    2. Clatworthy takes Katz to task for his answers to the Political Courage Test, yet Clathworthy did not take the test himself.

    3. Clatworthy has hidden his Regent University past from his website. Why is that?

    4. Clatworthy’s connection to Regent University opens up some valid questions which he should answer.

    5. Clatworthy is tied to the Republican Party more than Katz to the Democratic Party. This concerns me.

” Clatworthy takes Katz to task for his answers to the Political Courage Test, yet Clathworthy did not take the test himself.”

    And Biden won’t debate cry-baby O’Donnell!

“Clatworthy has hidden his Regent University past from his website. Why is that?”

You mean it was on his webpage but hidden! Did he break the law?

“Clatworthy’s connection to Regent University opens up some valid questions which he should answer.”

Minner get’s elected with a GED and we should trust democratic voters?

“Clatworthy is tied to the Republican Party more than Katz to the Democratic Party. This concerns me.”

Katz will be virgin and the only D’s will take him under their wing like a young punk going to crossbar hotel! I am going to bust on Katz as person because I don’t know him!

I don’t know him as a politician nor does any of his support. Clatworthy who by the way doesn’t communicate because I’ve insulted the party may be brainwashed by the GOP but he is young and doesn’t need a political bitch in legislative hall to lead him around by the nose.

All I am saying John has the ability to work with other and make compromises. May Katz has the same ability! I don’t know John from a blog interview but know him from 5 years of working with him! I think by now all the local bloggers pretty much peg me as being full of shit! But aren’t those who hold true to their party lines?

There’s no guarantee Clatworthy or Katz would turn out to be a sorry ass legislators I am judging John based on how he treated me as person and I’ve witness his interaction with people! Sure John’s customers an Katz’s patients will say wonder thing about each. However , we’re talking about John’s interaction within the political circle and he has a deep respect for other people views right or wrong against his, that shows character. Let’s try it another way! I am a nobody and John treated me like a somebody! However, his head is up his ass with some of the educational issue but he’ll see reality when he get’s to Dover. Those who sell up Choice schools have no F’ing clue that students just can’t saying I am choicing to any school I want!

If my views are full of shit so be it !

“At least we found common ground.”

Delaware Liberal is great! It’s all in the game of who can shovel the shit without the other parties smelling it! This is why we are the greatest country on Earth! Stay cool!

Clatworthy is a good person and I am sure Katz is good person!

Ohhhh, ho, HO! It’s shoveled here alright and it stinks up the planet!

Yet, I remain oddly fascinated by it and need my fix daily.

    BASTARDS!!!!

    BTW, 😀
