DEwind: The Week That Was Sept. 29th

Filed in Delaware by on October 7, 2008

A day late and a dollar short, but it’s here.

The big blogging news in Delaware is of a personal nature. First is that Don Viti has spawned . . . again. Congratulations to Mrs. Hot Viti, Don and Little Don Viti. The second item is that regular Republican troll mike w has been hired by his firm full-time. Hopefully, he’ll be busier at work.

Delaware Curmodgeon is supporting Jim Bowers for State Representative.

You may remember that I was quite apoplectic about the failure to override Governor Minner’s veto of Senate Bill 245. Remember that? The eminent domain bill, and all of the Senators who flipped? Dang, I’m not even a homeowner I even I could understand the simplicity and rightness of SB 245.

Mr. Bowers’ opponent, Bryon Short, abstained from voting on this bill when it was presented before the House.

. . .

I am sorry, Mr. Short. There is no “abstaining” on a constitutional right.

Oh, not suprisingly, Bowers is a Republican. Could a libertarian in Delaware ever show us that they are more than a Republican in third-party clothing by allowing their social views to trump their fiscal views?

Delaware Liberal’s interviews with the next governor of Delaware were posted last week regarding Education, Open Government, Reforming Democratic Politics in Delaware, Reforming State Government and Potential Lt. Governors

Delaware Way asks why no one is paying attention to Mike Castle’s opponent. Really, someone is running against him? I hate to be glib about Karen Hartley-Nagle’s chances, but with limited money and the common thinking Castle helps Delaware because he knows his way around, she sadly doesn’t have chance. The question that should be asked, is who will garner more vote: Hartley-Nagle or Lee? My bet is on Hartley-Nagle.

Is Workforce Housing on its last legs? I strongly believe that killing this ordinance is making some pretty strange bedfellows, though Delaware Watch hits the nail on the head:

Yet there is an obvious and increasing need for low-cost housing as the population grows and the USA economy continues its fascination with shrinking the wages of the vast majority of Americans with impunity. Two-thirds of all Americans report $50,000 or less as household income on their tax returns. Two thirds of all Americans have to live somewhere and they too want a bite at the American dream.

While I support rescinding the ordinance, I cannot support inaction on the need to provide low-cost housing. Fairness and common sense dictate that when it comes to the provision of the necessities life (e.g. shelter), majorities matter.

Mike’s Musing covers Beau’s deployment ceremony.

Jason writes about the competitive races for State Senate and the State Legislature.

Kilroy calls the Lt. Governor race for Copeland.

Just from a political perspective I call it for Senator Charles Copeland as the next Lt. Governor! Sorry Matt Denn but Copeland is out charming the voters!

Not that I am excited to make this prediction but Copeland has made some great advances into the Wilmington and New Castle County minority votes.

And while we are on the topic of Lt. Governor, here are the candidates ads.

Sometimes a libertarian has to make sacrifices.

I thought that 2nd ad was very good as far as human interest stuff goes.

Oh, and thanks for the link/congrats.

I think the usual built in 35% for the Dem challenger is a built in 40%. Nagle will exceed expecations on that alone.

The problem is that given her lack of funds and late start she will not make a dent in the remaining 20%.

In a way this is turning out to be Spivak II. That 20% of persuadable voters may not like Castle much, but they like the challenger less.

  3. Pinhead says:

Especially one who whines about people from DL being mean to her!

  4. I am one of those who have turned away from Castle, refusing to vote for him this time around. Then again, I don’t have the bias of being uninformed. I have spoken to a few people close to retirement age who defend him up and down, “because he was a good governor, and he’s been a good representative.”

Politics must be the only job where you can do one thing right and brag about it for the rest of your career.

Another thing: There were 40th District candidate interviews on That’s Elbert, What a Smell, and the Delmar Dustpan. They collaborated together and split the questions.

In KHN’s case, they don’t even know the challenger. That’s what happens when someone thinks you can win a statewide office, as you can a district or senate seat, by knocking on doors. The grassroots people hate hearing it, but you must raise money, gobs of it, to run for federal office successfully.

  6. jason330 says:

Grassroots people like me don’t have a problem with reality. I think you can bootstrap a statewide campaign, but $200,000 is bootstrap level.

  7. nemski says:

Brian, yes, I saw the 40th interviews. I’ll be mentioning them next week’s edition, “The Week That Was October 6th”. 🙂

  8. Unstable Isotope says:

    Congratulations mike w.!

  9. Kilroy says:

Nothing personal Mr. Denn, its all politics! It’s obvious that you fan base don’t dwell on this blog! The cards are reading Copeland! However, you are a wonderful person and have don’t really good job and will continue working in the Markell administration.
