This is why I hate the party endorsement process.

Filed in National by on August 14, 2008

Because it gives license to the News Journal to write crap this this:

Two Democrats vying to be Delaware’s next insurance commissioner went after one of their own Wednesday, attacking the party’s endorsed candidate for what they called conflicts of interest over donations to his campaign.

With the phrases “went after one of their own” and “attacked,” the News Journal is painting what Tom Savage and Karen Weldin Stewart did last night as disreputable and nefarious, when all they did was debate the issues with Gene Reed at a debate broadcast live on WDEL, all the while raising the very legitimate issue of Reed allegedly taking money from those he proposes to regulate.    Indeed, in identifying Reed as “the party’s endorsed candidate,” the News Journal takes the position that any questioning of him by his primary opponents is somehow wrong and underhanded.

If Reed was not the endorsed candidate, but just a frontrunner, would that opening sentence be structured with such a bias towards Reed?

The News Journal, the Democratic Party, and even Gene Reed need to realize something: Gene Reed is not the Democratic nominee.    Just like John Carney is not the Democratic nominee.   They both have to do something first: win our votes and then win the primary election.   If a candidate has the right ideas, the right background, and runs a good campaign, he or she will win.  He or she needs not to be proped up by the Delaware Democratic Party with their “endorsement” and the News Journal with their biased coverage.

WDEL did headline a nefarious quote by KWS today though. It was an unattributed “someone told me” attack on Reed that REALLY overreached.

  2. delawaredem says:

The NJ also contained that quote in the story about people allegedly feeling compelled to give to Reed.

After listening to that debate, I for one am ready to leave my selection for Insurance Commissioner blank at the primary and just go for Brady. Reed came off as corrupt and cocky about his ability not to get caught, Weldin-Stewart seemed like she was just making crap up to take Reed down even further than maybe he deserves to go. And Savage, quite frankly, just sounded like an angry and confused old man (shades of McCain…) to me.

Is there a ‘podcast’ on this debate, and if so, can you guys put it up in the post. I missed it, but heard there was a huge knife-fight involving large pieces of gReed’s ass.

  5. delawaredem says:

Check out WDEL. I believe they have a podcast of it.

Tom Savage has my vote. This guy will bring real change to the Insurance Dept. Tom will stop the graft that goes along with that office for more than 25 years. Tom supports the sane and program effective insurance coverage, “single payer health care”, supported by millions of americans and supported by the majority of doctors and nurses. The Medical people are sick and tired of having insurance companies overruling doctors decisions on treatment and care.

Health care is one of the biggest reasons corporations are moving out of Delaware. They cannot keep up with the costs skyrocketing, in 2 years our health care costs will equal to a large mortgage payment. Single payer gets rid of the greed of the insurance companies who use “paper chasers” who add nothing to health care, but attribute to 20% of our health care dollars. Its time for single payer in Delaware, join the rest of the industrialized nations, we cannot afford to do anything else.

KWS has the ‘protack affect’ on me. I just want her to go away. Far, far, far away. I want her to stop running for anything and everything. I want to know how she was able to borrow money from herself for her campaign when she has no money. If her CFR is an indication of her fiscal responsibility, I don’t want her any where near public office. Savage is not even a player. Gene Reed is, hands down, the best candidate for this seat on the democrat side.

  8. delawaredem says:

I agree P.I., and it’s a choice of lesser evils.

And for those who wish to vote for Brady in the fall, I say that Brady will have to promise to wholeheartedly endorse and work to approve Markell or Carney’s universal healthcare plan, and be Matt Denn, only a little heavier.

If he can promise that, maybe I can think about considering voting for him.

Until then, I am stuck with Reed.

Feh. The NJ is part of the machine. Why does this continue to be a shock?

Juicy scoops I just got on this race:

Tom Savage, head of the Firefighters pension fund, just wrote out two checks for $200, one to himself, and one to Karen Weldin-Stewart. Now why would Tom Savage write a check out for his opponent?

Also about Tom Savage, he is planning on running as an Independent if he loses the Democratic Primary, which would then split the democratic vote between himself and the Democratic Primary winner, which would open the door up for a Brady win.

If anyone else heard the same Tom Savage I did last night…W–T–F–!?
