PINEHURST, N.C. A former Army medic made famous by a photograph that showed him carrying an injured Iraqi boy during the first week of the war has died of an apparent overdose, police said.

Joseph Patrick Dwyer died last week at a hospital in Pinehurst, according to the Boles Funeral Home. He was 31. The photograph, taken in March 2003, showed Dwyer running to a makeshift military hospital while cradling the boy. The photo appeared in newspapers, magazines and television broadcasts worldwide, making Dwyer became a symbol of heroism. His mother said the military could have done more to help with post-traumatic stress. “He just couldn’t get over the war,” Maureen Dwyer said. “He just couldn’t do it. Just wasn’t Joseph. Joseph never came home.” Read on…

I’m not gonna lie and say I blame the soldier on this one. If this pussy can’t handle killing people than he is in the wrong business. I don’t care who you are, if you are going to enlist in the military then you should know that you are going to see some terrible shit, so what if your best friend loses his arm, half his face and his arteries shoot blood three feet from his neck onto your boots that already have part of his ear and nose on them. Listen, when you sign up, this is what you get. So suck it up, grunt! Get over it!

I personally don’t know why people that are defending our freedom in Iraq expect to be treated like freaking hero’s when they get home. Every body wants a god damned medal for doing their job. I blame the freaking liberals for making this pussy, well… a pussy!

HORAH SEMPER FI, now those guys, they know how to handle their buddies being decapitated.

Yet another sad incident in a terrible war of choice. I feel for these guys. Yesterday, I went to a going away party for a family friend that ships out later this week. I am hoping that we can bring him home sooner than his scheduled return date with an Obama presidency.

  2. I don’t feel for them. It’s what they signed up for

  3. Kilroy says:

What sucks is, the U.S ok Bush is wrestling over terms on the next security agreement that expires at the end of this year. The Iraqi leaders will extend the U.S. military presence but wants a firm timetable for U.S. Troop withdraw. Bush does agree with the terms and feels there should be no timetable set.

What sucks about the enlistment practices is baiting young people in with enlistment bonuses and college funding when they get out. These kids take the bait and parents look at the savings on college funding or perhaps many couldn’t go to college as parents could afford. It all boils down to the question are many of our young troop paid mercenaries! The alternative is activating the military draft and then the military will be full of discontented troops. But do keep in mind the bonds these men and women make are genuine and that is the core of the strength.

If we were to take all the troops in Iraq and redeploy them to the boarders of the United States we would have better control of illegal immigration, keep terrorist out and our troops could be with their families.

It time for the men of Iraq to grow some balls and fight for their own freedom.

  4. Wow, way to show some empathy there buddy, and how many years did you serve in the war zone?

Ya know, prior to entering boot camp, and getting into combat, it is kinda hard for anyone to know if they are going to handle the horrors of combat.

Or do you think we should only allow murderous thugs in our military with no capacity for empathy or compassion, and the price those impose upon the psyche?

  5. Wow, way to show some empathy there buddy, and how many years did you serve in the war zone?

4 years submarines, I didn’t get to see limbs blown from bodies, but I’m tough and I could have handled it.

Or do you think we should only allow murderous thugs in our military with no capacity for empathy or compassion, and the price those impose upon the psyche?

don’t we already do that with the low standards Bush has allowed?

  6. Frank says:

Did you notice the guy was a medic, for Pete’s sake.

My best friend, when he entered the army in 1969 (thanks to a concerted regimen of not studying) went in as a Medic, precisely so he be able help, rather than hurt people.

What an extraordinary insensitive and mean-sprited post.

  7. oh for F’s SAKE Frank! haven’t you been by here enough to know that is how I FEEL this guy is being treated by Bush and his bunch of Chicken hawks? Not HOW I REALLY FEEL?

    sheesh

  8. Poobah says:

Yeah, like this guy will do any better in command of the military:

  9. My guess is if you showed him on the Map that Afghanistan was were the 9/11 attackers were trained, he would know to take care of business there and not a country with a different name

  10. andy says:

The really sad thing is that the only reason this poor guy is being talked about is because he’s “famous” from the picture. How many other boys and girls (and that’s what they are, most of them – just kids) have died unnoticed from the same cause? The way we treat our veterans is a disgrace.
My son just graduated from Naval Medical Corps school and is trying to get stationed with the Marines FMF. Can’t hardly think about this kind of thing happening to my 19-year old “baby”.

  11. agreed andy…hope it all works out for you. pretty scary stuff

    and I mean that sincerely

  12. mike w. says:

What an asshole. I’m ashamed you are from my home state. I don’t understand why you’d speak ill of a dead, troubled soldier who couldn’t cope with the horrors he’d seen in combat, particularly a medic who’s seen things you couldn’t imagine.

  13. donviti says:

before you judge, maybe you should come here a few more times before you judge these words as my own..

thanks for visiting, and believe me, as many others have done, you will eventually come to understand what I say and who I speak for

  14. Disbelief says:

mike and mad scientist, its dv’s version of “A Modest Proposal”. you know?

  15. Disbelief says:

Its like when someone says, “I’m as good looking as DV.” We all have a good natured laugh and move on.

  16. donviti says:

after having visited your blog, the feelings are mutual about being a delawarean.

  17. donviti says:

    dis,

    you had me at hello

and no, they don’t get me

  18. Von Cracker says:

    I get you, DV!

    You’re as “sick” as me…. 😀

  19. Dominique says:

I get that it was meant to be satire, but it was way insensitive and over the top. Think about how his family members would feel reading that. They’d have to get halfway through the comments before they found out that it was a feeble attempt at humor. Is this as clever as you’re capable of being?

  20. DHB,

I get your point now regarding how are vets are being treated for PTSD (and I agree it is atrocious), but your attempt at irony or at being facetious has failed. You relied too heavily on a person reading this post to know you through other posts.

Oh, and don’t be so sure that just because you think your tough that you could handle the blood and guts and violence. I am not a necessarily tough guy and I don’t know how many people could have lived through the violence I’ve been through and not needed therapy or help.

Until you’ve lived through such trauma, you have no idea how you will react to it, and even then, you have no idea if the next bit will be the one to push you over the edge.

  21. MRS,

thanks brother. It’s kind of like turning on Howard Stern for the first time, the shock will wear off eventually and in the end, you will buy me a beer and hoist me on your shoulders as your hero

  22. Dominique says:

The big difference is when you listen to Stern, you can tell by the tone of his voice and the surrounding laughter (even Fred’s sound effects) that’s it’s a joke. On the internet, humor isn’t always apparent.

  23. everything I say is a joke. Unless it’s directed at bitter old, McDonald’s eating, long winded, cranky, humorless women

  24. mike w. says:

^ So it’s OK to insult someone, a dead veteran, and then say “oh, well I was just joking?”

That doesn’t make you any less of an asshole.

  25. that’s your opinion buddy

  26. mike w. says:

I KNOW you wouldn’t say what you wrote about him to his families face or to the face of one of his fellow servicemen. You wouldn’t have the balls for that.

  27. Frank says:

    You wrote:

“oh for F’s SAKE Frank! haven’t you been by here enough to know that is how I FEEL this guy is being treated by Bush and his bunch of Chicken hawks? Not HOW I REALLY FEEL?”

I don’t know how you really feel.

I know only what you wrote.

If you meant something other than what you wrote, them perhaps writing something else might have been advisable.

  28. mike w. says:

When you write something people are going to assume it’s your opinion unless you specifically stated otherwise.

I still think he meant what he said and is now disavowing his statements because people reacted negatively.

  29. Pandora says:

Mikey, lighten up. DV’s right, you haven’t been around here long enough to know who the players are. Didn’t you ask G Rex a question concerning his politics today?

  30. mike w. says:

Yes I did and he gave me a straightforward answer. That’s more than I can say for DTB.

And since we’re on the subject. Are DTB and Don Vito the same guy?

Also, who he is has no impact on whether what he wrote was his opinion. It clearly was.

  31. pandora says:

Lighten up! Donviti is one of earth’s great mysteries! Good luck with pinning him down.

  32. I still think he meant what he said and is now disavowing his statements because people reacted negatively.

well then with all due respect douchebag…you don’t know fucking shit about me. My history is well documented around here. All the way back to my Veterans day post.

    so, fuck off buddy

and that you take as meaning what I say, dick

  33. mike w. says:

“lighten up?” I’m not the one cursing and throwing around hostilities. (except for “asshole” but you did call a dead veteran a “pussy.”) Though I can’t say such behavior is unusual for anti-gun people. Calm down, and most certainly make sure you stay away from guns considering your emotional outbursts.

This post, and those you’ve left at my blog only reinforce my low opinion of you and reinforce the very points I’ve made.

  34. let me know when your caccoon (sp?) hatches…I’ll be glad to show you around the country

  35. mike w. says:

Oh, and hiding behind the “It was just a joke meant to show how the Bush Administration treats vets” is complete BS DTB and you know it.

Comment #2 to this post you said

“I don’t feel for them. It’s what they signed up for”

“4 years submarines, I didn’t get to see limbs blown from bodies, but I’m tough and I could have handled it.”

Not until comment #7 when you were getting blasted for being an insensitive prick did you change your tune and disavow your statements, saying,

“haven’t you been by here enough to know that is how I FEEL this guy is being treated by Bush and his bunch of Chicken hawks? Not HOW I REALLY FEEL?”

  36. um, no it’s not bullshit. But you can are welcome to have a wrong opinion. Feel free to search for my post on Veterans day 2007 I believe…have it at little fella…then when you are all done You can tell me you are sorry and I will forgive you

  37. mike w,

“haven’t you been by here enough to know that is how I FEEL this guy is being treated by Bush and his bunch of Chicken hawks? Not HOW I REALLY FEEL?”

That is where it stands, bro. If you don’t believe me, that’s fine. I personally don’t give a shit. I’m a veteran and have lived the horrible treatment firsthand. I’m telling you, you are wrong. You didn’t get the point of the post. I’m not sorry, I don’t care. I told you what I was trying to convey. It took till the 7th line for me to have to spell it out to your thick skull. NOT because I changed my tune.

  38. i have had this arguement with at least a half dozen other retards and though they didn’t believe me either the first couple of days, I think they came to know months later where I stood….

  39. This would be the post that vindicated me 4 MONTHS after my Veterans day post. I have always said that the Executive branch doesn’t give a fuck about the soldiers and have essentially said, “it’s what they signed up for”. NOW I may not say it that exact way evertime b/c I am a colorful guy…

So I have dedicated 20 more minutes of my life to you that I will never get back. Make it 21 now…I didn’t have to do this…but I have had fun proving you are wrong.

    http://delawareliberal.net//2008/03/24/so-my-veterans-day-post-caused-an-uproar-i-want-to-know-how-pissed-you-are-that-cheney-said-this/

  40. mike w. says:

Ah, so I see this wasn’t the 1st time. You have a history of saying things in such a way that everyone takes you for an asshole.

I understand that you disagree with Bush on the war, but jesus talk about bad delivery on your part.

  41. In the end, I was right. And when Cheney spoke on March 23rd it vindicated me from accusatory assholes like you…..

  42. mike w. says:

If you’re going to say something controversial, especially something that’s going to make the majority of people call you an “asshole” when taken at face value, then you really shouldn’t take offense when people call you out.

You should have expected the overwhelmingly negative response you received.

  43. mike w. says:

“I’m a veteran and have lived the horrible treatment firsthand.”

And I have family members who are veterans that have had nothing but good things to say about VA hospitals.
