Delaware Bloggers Conference Committee Forming

Filed in National by on June 29, 2008

Last year Jason and Dave Burris came up with an idea to have an annual bloggers convention/conference.  The idea seemed to be received with a great deal of interest, but died on the vine.  Several of us here at DL have decided to pursue the idea with more committment.  Jason, Pandora and I have promised to be involved, but this will have to be done in an inclusive way if it is going to work.

So with that said, I would like to invite people to be involved in the planning of the event (tentatively scheduled for February).  The keynote speaker is hoped to be Allan Loudell.  I have recently spoken to Allan, and he is quite interested in the idea.

Please volunteer in the comments section of this post to let us know whether or not you want to be involved.  We will have a few face to face meetings, but most of it will be done via email, chat and phone.  You do not have to be a blogger to be involved, we like regular commenters from around the Delaware blogosphere, too.

Sounds like a great idea and of course I would love to be involved.

  2. liberalgeek says:

Excellent. I am also hoping for some people from the other side. Burris, Smitty, Steve Newton?

Ideally, 4 or 5 blogs would be represented.

  3. Rebecca says:

Count on PDD to pitch in!

  4. delawaredem says:

    Blogs that must be involved:

    Tommywind
    Down with Absolutes
    Delaware Way
    Delaware Watch
    Delaware Politics
    Kavips
    Delaware Curmudgeon
    Colossus of Rhodey (Hube)
    Delaware Libertarian

I do not mean this as an exclusive list, just those that should be involved.

  5. liberalgeek says:

Looks like a good list. There are no requirements, though. I highly encourage all of them to get involved.

  6. are we going to have it in Geeks basement?

should I bring my own die and warlock that can cast spells?

    count me in!

  7. liberalgeek says:

Plan is to rent a conference room (in Dover?) and serve food, cash bar, etc. I’ll make sure it’s accessible, in case you break something else…

  8. RickJ19958 says:

Throw Gazizza in there as well.

  9. TommyWonk says:

I’d be happy to help, of course.

By the way, I’m back to TommyWonk. I switched to TommyWind for a couple of days just to celebrate.

  10. delawaredem says:

I know. And I liked the name. Not that I don’t like TommyWonk.

  11. liberalgeek says:

Did they take that picture of you before or after the WHYY roundtable?

  12. Shirley says:

Definitely in on this … Dover sounds like a good half-way point for people. The only thing I would say is that February tends to be a bit contrary weather-wise….would anyone consider early November?

  13. Definitely not early November…too hopped up from election season.

  14. liberalgeek says:

The only problem I see with November is that we will just be completing an election. I hope that we will all be exhausted from weeks of heavy blogging.

  15. delawaredem says:

Of course. I would love to see her interact with Burris.

By the way, are we sure Dave can make it back from his exile in Paraguay?

  16. liberalgeek says:

I have added a page to DelawareLiberal to start tracking this stuff. Mike, are you in?

  17. Steve Newton says:

Didn’t get to comment on this earlier, but I’m in.

By the way, Geek, how did I get to be “the other side”?

  18. Ehh, we’ll see. I tend to shy away from self-congratulatory escapades like these. No offense. There’s a reason I didn’t come out in support of the previous incarnation that never was; I think these things are silly. Which is why I find myself going to the ones for politicians only to write about them and make fun of them. If we do this, I’d end up making a gag out of the whole thing.

  19. delawaredem says:

    We would expect nothing less.

  20. Art Downs says:

Open-ended events can be a lot of fun when people with strong views can disagree without being disagreeable. They are also quite rare.

  21. R Smitty says:

You know I want to help, maybe. Only if I get to add comments about it and not have to post.

Mike – win or lose, we can arrange for the Lordess O’Donnell to sit with you.

  22. jason330 says:

    Mike,

I know what you mean. I think the trick is going to be keeping the blogger spirit as we grow.

This should certainly be more self-parody than self congratulations. Otherwise we’ll all be Celia Cohen three years from now.

  23. I am very interested in being involved.
We have done tremendous work, are hugely effective and can have even more influence as the election year grinds on.

  24. Lordess and lardass….heh
Mike, I am not interested in having an award donning ceremony /banquet type thing. Iam interested in having a conference with topical panels that generates discussion and leads to something concrete if only in a greater understanding of our political system through our eyes and eperiences.
Feedback from the ‘audience’ and interactive discussion is where it is at.

  25. cassandra m says:

I’ll help too — unless there are already too many participants from DE Liberal.

  26. jason330 says:

    BTW –

Thanks for posting this geek. I got sidetracked with real life all afternoon.

  27. pandora says:

You know I’m in. I also hope this leads to great discussion, but also hope it generates even more buzz about blogs.

  28. Disbelief says:

Why don’t we just get freakin’ drunk and forget about anything serious? That way, we can look forward to the next week’s private emails about who saw who naked who wasn’t supposed to.

  29. Disbelief says:

And if you find yourself feeling warm and fuzzy toward an attending public figure you’ve been blasting for years and get that alcohol fueled confidence that they probably think you’re a real straight-shooter and a great person,
you’ve had too much to drink.

  30. Ryan says:

I would like to attend even though I am not in the DE Blogosphere anymore

  31. Kilroy says:

    Ryan
“I would like to attend even though I am not in the DE Blogosphere anymore”

Sorry dude no go ! Your on the B list with Kilroy.
How about a few drinks at Bull’s Eye. Maybe Jen will show up and dance on the table for us!

  32. liberalgeek says:

There are no B-Lists. Although there will likely be no table-dancing either…

We would love to have both Ryan and Kilroy there.

  33. Kilroy says:

Kilroy is in ! I’ll design a poster ! Collector’s item for sure!

    OK Ryan we’re in 🙂

  34. Shirley says:

November. Duh, yeah that was a moronic idea.

If there is anything I can do to help, let me know.

  35. Dana Garrett says:

I’m in but only if I get the tallest-baldest-oldest-paunchiest-combo blogger’s award.

  36. RSmitty says:

I may even offer up best overuse of a funny nickname originated by said over-user (this really is a compliment):

Dana Garrett for use of Lickspittle.

Can I get a “second” from the masses?

  37. liberalgeek says:

If there are awards, we would likely break those categories out into individual awards. You may get tallest, baldest (but I’m working to unseat you) and oldest (but you may have some competition). But paunchiest, you got no shot.

You would have to start consuming frozen lard on a stick as a nightly dessert.

  38. TommyWonk says:

Actually Dana, I’m thinking you’re shoo-in for blogger with the scariest eyeglasses.

  39. Dana Garrett says:

“Actually Dana, I’m thinking you’re shoo-in for blogger with the scariest eyeglasses.”

    That’s a lot cooler. That’s the one I want. 🙂
