I’m getting a bad feeling

Filed in National by on June 28, 2008

For the last few months a knot has been tightening in my stomach. The idea that Bush/Cheney will leave the White House quietly is well… absurd. I am fully expecting them to go out with a bang. How big of a bang is anyone’s guess… One big enough to tie the next President’s hands while tying the U.S. to the Bush agenda? Iran springs to mind, but I’d be foolish to limit myself. After all, Iraq wasn’t even on the radar (at least not the public’s) until Bush placed it there.

I’ve braced myself for the return of the color-coded terror warnings, but when McCain says he’ll overtake Obama in the last 48 hours I get a really bad feeling.

“I’m the underdog. I’m behind,” the presumptive GOP nominee told reporters in Ohio.
“I’ve got to catch up and get ahead. And I expect to do that about 48 hours before the general election,” he said with a laugh.

Really, John? Why would you think that?

Power never gives up power willingly. Naomi Kline has it right, there is no catastophe these folks won’t trigger and then take advantage of as they take over our nation. It isn’t paranoia when they really are out to get you.

    I’m with you Pandora.

  2. jason330 says:

I know how you feel, but there is a false premise at work here.

In a way you are buying into the rightwing frame that some attack (Terror Guys against us/ Us against Terror Guys) helps Bush/McCain.

I realize we’ve all been conditioned to think that way – but can anyone really view more bombimgs as anything other than another Republican failure?

  3. pandora says:

Jason, I through putting anything past them. God, I’m becoming paranoid.

  4. delawaredem says:

Such shenanigans may tip the scales in a close race, but this race is not going to be close.

Moody’s Economy.com predicts based on current economic indicators and incumbent fatigue, Obama will win 3o states and DC (losing none of the Kerry states) for a total of 370 electoral votes. There will only be five swing states (where the poll difference is 5 points or less), and even if McCain won those 5 states, he would still fall 57 electoral votes short.

  5. Unstable Isotope says:

Well, I get that uneasy feeling as well. Bush and his crew have consistently lived down to my worst expectations. However, it really does look like he’s going to go but we shouldn’t take out eye off the ball – we need to make sure he doesn’t attack Iran.

  6. Brian says:

Pandora, the really terrible thing is that just becuase you are paranoid, does not mean you are wrong. Government by fear always leads to that.

You know, I am for open government so that we have more honest government. But what we have now….oh….Let’s hope this proves to be wrong.

  7. pandora says:

I just keep feeling that I’ve always underestimated them. Every time I’ve said, “No way!” they’ve found a way.

DD and Jason, I hope you’re right, but I still have a knot in my stomach.

  8. Brian says:

    Pandora,

    Remix:

*People like to misunderestimate, ummm, well they misunderestimification of all kinds of things, you know….*

  9. Brian says:

“To get McCain to win said Mr. Black, a terrorist attack would not be a bad thing…” Oh really? Hmmm. That is not how the American political process works now is it?

A more telling thing is what the hell are you democrats going to do to stop any kind of thing like that? Many of the people of this nation are looking to you as the last best hope….

  10. Brian says:

Did I forget to mention, that is a sick sentiment.

  11. Brian says:

I hope our Senators in Delaware are taking a proactive stance on Mr. Black’s threatening statements and working with justice or the appropriate federal agency to get this guy who threatened our people and property recommended to the right agency…. Are the states allowed to bring charges when people use terror as a political tool? I seem to remember in 1798 we had an issue with that….and Marshall resolved that indeed a state’s AG could bring charges against someone as long as it could be substantiated.

  12. Dominique says:

‘I hope our Senators in Delaware are taking a proactive stance on Mr. Black’s threatening statements and working with justice or the appropriate federal agency to get this guy who threatened our people and property recommended to the right agency’

Seriously? Relax, people. No one’s out to get you or your candidate. Sheesh. Are you 9/11 Truthers, too?

  13. jen says:

Pandora’s fears and concerns are not out of line and justifiable, without a doubt. It is scary as hell.

The idea the someone could actually “stop them” is naive. Unstable Iostopes statement that “However, it really does look like he’s going to go but we shouldn’t take out eye off the ball – we need to make sure he doesn’t attack Iran.” is great inconcept, but hard to accomplish. We seem to be inches away from an incident. All it would take would be one provocation or arranged provocation to set the wheels in motion. The current powers that be are certainly ready, willing, and able to move forward against Iran.

Recall the recent history of Republican coups–even failed coups count: Tricky Dick, Watergate, Iran-Contra, Nicaragua, that little island state we invaded suddenly one weekend, the 2000 election, the 2004 election the recount debacle, WMD, invasion and occupation of Iraq, troubles with Iran, relations with South Korea, the list goes on and on.

I do not trust them at all and I feel that we are fairly powerless against them. Gee, thanks for bringing me down, guys. I was having a pretty upbeat day until now…

Really, how can one stop the likes of Cheney and the neo-corporate empire?

  14. The team that’s in the White House right now has shown no scruples when it comes to using fear as a voting-for-the-Right motivator. I agree with Jen: Pandora’s fears are rational and totally within the bounds of rationality.

Bush/Cheney and the cabal of neo-cons that have infiltrated this country and its election system (mainly via Diebold and proxies like that bimbo Katherine Harris) should never be discounted.

  15. Truth Teller says:

Yes I remember that little island state we invaded right after 241 marines were killed in Beirut Lebanon just like the way we invaded Iraq after 911 none of those folks from Granada were responsible for the deaths of those marines just like none of the Iraqis were responsible for 911. This seems to be a Repuk trick attack the person who hasn’t attacked you.

    Thank you Ronald Ragan

  16. Such shenanigans may tip the scales in a close race, but this race is not going to be close.
    *
    AGREED
that goes with election tampering that went on in 2000 and 2004 – a tight race allows for marginal numbers being manipulated by the 1,000 points of shit. This election will not be breachable that way. They are planting the national security fear-mongering but that is expected. The blogs, uber-blogs and orgs like MoveOn and Media Matters plus a little TDS and Olbermann go a long way against the tide.

  17. Frieda Berryhill says:

John Bolton, the former American ambassador to the United Nations, has predicted that Israel could attack Iran as late as after the November presidential election but before George W Bush’s successor is sworn in.

The Israelis have one eye on the calendar because of the pace at which the Iranians are proceeding (so they say ) to develop their nuclear weapons capability
Last week, Israeli jets carried out a long-range exercise over the Mediterranean that American intelligence officials concluded was practice for air strikes against Iran.
Who knows, the tail may be wagging the dog here.

  18. Call It says:

The people that fall for this Right-wing-vote-for-me scare tactic are the same clown shoes that get all of their information solely from CNN and Fox News. So seriously guys, this kind of talk, in my opinion, is above all of you. I think the concerns of a fall attack on Iran or some other “Terror-State” are indeed justified, but trying to reach and say it is going to happen for votes in November is f-ing ridiculous. I don’t believe for a second that you all are seriously worried about that.

  19. liz allen says:

IAEA and others disagree with Israel and the US. Russia, China, India will stand with Iran..so look out WW3, all those favoring more war better get your kids ready for the draft.

Iran is not Iraq…and the rest of the world will not tolerate the US empire, pre emptive strikes against any other nations. The real reason the Bush regime wants to attack Iran is the same reason they attacked Iraq….because Sadaam was going to sell his oil in euros, Iran is now saying they will do the same. When they do, the american dollar collapses. (Mosaic/Link TV) (international news station).

  20. Unstable Isotope says:

Yes, I hate how Bush makes me feel like a nutty conspiracy theorist sometimes. In most paranoid moments I think that Bush will declare some kind of “martial law” and refuse to leave when the time comes. After all, he thinks he is a king and accountable to no one. I do see signs of fatigue in Bush, I think he is ready to leave office – after all he is probably ready to cash in on his wingnut welfare tour.

I agree with Jen that there is very little we can do to prevent an attack on Iran if he decides to do it and our Congress does not seem to want to put any kind of curb on his power. The only thing I can think of that would distract Bush is impeachment hearing, but we know that is not happening.

Someone upthread mentioned Charlie Black commenting that a terrorist attack would help McCain. I am not so sure about that, since Republicans are in office right now, I think they will get the blame.

  21. jen says:

The tail has been wagging the dog for a long time. Many are not even used to thinking that way, so it tends to elude them.

Here is another piece of the clever conspiratorial picture: many evangelical and born-again Christians believe that the fall of Israel is tied to the rise of the last saving grace of their belief system–the so-called rapture. Would not continued foment in the middle east and an Israeli-Iranian conflict bring them one step closer?

Hmm… This is not something that keeps me up at night (at my age, that would be more like having to pee five times) but it is part of the scenario.

    Jeez. I think I need a drink.

  22. jason330 says:

We seem to be inches away from an incident. All it would take would be one provocation or arranged provocation to set the wheels in motion. The current powers that be are certainly ready, willing, and able to move forward against Iran.

After reading this I flashed back to a meeting some PPDers and I with Tom Carper in his Wilmington office last year.

He said that Gates (the then new Sec Def. at the time) would be the grown up and we really didn’t need to worry about an attack on Iran.

Needless to say – I didn’t leave that meeting any less worried.

  23. Kilroy says:

I am scared, is Bush really Satan? The Iranian government is sponsoring terrorist attacks on American troops. Iran and Saudis are poised to divide Iraq in to two regions Sunnis (Saudi) and Shiites (Iran) then divide the oil.

Let’s assume the Democrats takes the White House lives up to their promise (doubtful) to pull the troops out starting 6 months into office. Will Iraq plunge into a full scale civil war ? YES ! Will Iran step back ? NO! Will the Pussy ass current Iraqi government prevail? NO !

I doubt if Bush will attack Iran however if he decides to I strongly suggest he forgo the nuclear weapons and go straight to the H bombs (Hydrogen doesn’t destroy the ozone). Also the H bomb kills people and leaves buildings standing. It will cost us less to rebuild Iran.

Relax just busting your chops on the H bomb!

Jason you should be ashamed of yourself you know dam well with the current crisis in Iran with the government canceling all Driver’s Ed in their high schools they don’t have time fighting a war with Bush. It’s true I just read it on the AP live news feed. Iran canceled all Driver’s Ed classes because all the school’s Camels are sick

  24. Kilroy,

You’re a fucking riot! Love ya, man!

  25. kavips says:

Kilroy asks if Bush really is Satan?

    Answer: Obviously not.

    Cheney is. (lol)

    (I also echo Mike’s sentiments)…..

  26. jason330 says:

    uhhhhh…okay…

    Now then,

McCain not only has to worry about Bob Barr. Now he has to watch out for George Bush.

    writeinbush.com

    Yes, God wants it.

    Stay the Course

Under the strong leadership of God’s President we’ve been safe for 7 years. But if we abandon God now, we could be hit again.

We don’t need to worry about the details, we just trust in God and vote our faith. When we step out in faith and leave the details to God, there’s no limit to what can be accomplished.

  27. I know that the tightening in my belly of late was actually my shorts

    knyuck, knyuck…..

  28. pandora says:

Bush’s Bang of an exit won’t necessarily involve Iran… but I sense there will be a Bang.

  29. delawaredem says:

OMG, did you guys read that blog on writeinBush site. Comedy gold.

  30. Kilroy says:

You guys should be ashamed of yourselves call our president and vice-president war mongers. George is really a cool dude in private. I ran into him about two year and half years ago in the Ritz Carlton Washington D.C. I was able to convince two Secret Service Agents standing guard at the door to the bathroom next to the Lobby Café if they didn’t let me in I would shit right in the hallway. One agent crack the door to the bathroom and yelled in , “did the eagle shit yet?” A voice yelled out , “let him in.” Dam it was G.W and he said, “how you doing son?” I said, I have to shit and why didn’t you send me a Christmas Card? He said, “Kilroy give me you address and I’ll put you on the list.” I gave my address to him. As I was going in stall number three he turned and smile. I said, “you didn’t blow a big one in he did you.?” He just chuckled and said “God Bless Our Troops.” I didn’t say it out loud because I didn’t want his Inspector Gadget of a body guard cap me in the ass with a 9mm. “ I said, to myself God needs to bless them because your Vice-president is fucking them” Anyhow, I went into the stall and wouldn’t you believe it , that prick ass wrote a note on the wall. He wrote, he sat Napoleon and blew his bone apart! Sign GW Sr. ! But is was GW Jr. who wrote it! Way to go sonny give dad a bad rap. Anyhow he did put me on the Christmas Card list! I scanned a copy an put it on my blog.

You guys really need to lay of the Bush because keeping your face in it will cause you to go blind.

Hey Matthews, next time I lend you a tie to wear on TV don’t stretch the dam thing out and where in the hell did the pecker tracks come from? What the hell were you people doing under the table?

  31. snark says:

quit worrying, you all know Karl Rove has already picked your next president.

Report: Iran to hit Israel if attacked
Sat Jun 28, 9:45 AM EDT
“The commander of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards warned that Tehran would respond to an attack against it by barraging Israel with missiles and controlling a key oil passageway in the Persian Gulf, said a newspaper report published Saturday.”

“An Israeli air attack that destroyed an unfinished nuclear reactor in Iraq in 1981 and a strike on a suspected nuclear facility in Syria in September have added to the suspicions that Israel is planning action against Iran”

Get with it people Bush won’t attacked Iran, Isreal wll and Bush will jump in to proyect Israel.

World War III is closer then you think! Just Remember it was Carter will hand the Iranian mess to Regan!

  33. delawaredem says:

Oh please. The Iranian Hostage crisis was prolonged by Reagan and his ilk so as to influence the 1980 election. Reagan was in cahoots with the Iranians throughout his presidency. Remember Iran-Contra?

  34. jen says:

Boy, I do. Those were the days–we were glued to any TV or radio during those hearings. It was so damned far out. Hard to believe that a Republican presidency would stoop that low.

    Psych!

  35. Kilroy says:

    delawaredem
    “Remember Iran-Contra?”

Yea whatever happen to the Contra? You mean Biden didn’t know about the C-130’s running mission out of New Caste to C.A. ? The CIA may have been stealth but CID was sloppy are all hell. Aren’t you going to bring up the drug trade as far a the fundrasiers for secret weapons purchaes, What about all the $3,000.00 coffes pots Carter boy bought! and the $400.oo Screwdrivers. What about your boy JFK? You think blondie real died in the nude? What about LBJ’s Bird did she real have something to fo with it??

  36. snark says:

    Kilroy,

    your count is off:

WW III was the cold war – We Won.

WW IV – The War on Terror currently has two theaters of opperation, Iraq and Afghanistan. If Iran joins the fray openly it will simply be an expansion of the Iraq Theater.

  37. Sharon says:

Pandora’s fears and concerns are not out of line and justifiable, without a doubt. It is scary as hell.

Not out of line if you’re a crazy conspiracist.

What are you guys gonna complain about once George Bush leaves office? Good God, it’s like looking in a box of animal crackers coming to this site.

  38. Pandora says:

We won’t have time to complain, Sharon. We’ll be too busy cleaning up Bush & Co.’s mess.

  39. jason330 says:

What are you guys gonna complain about once George Bush leaves office?

Any numbers of Bush’s legacy of fuck-ups which will take a generation to undo.

    – The Radicalized WingNutification of the Supreme Court

    – Iraq

    – The Bush economy.

Don’t worry your little head about it Sharon. If he leaves office peacefully, I think our plates will be full for a long long time.

  40. Kilroy says:

    Sharon
“What are you guys gonna complain about once George Bush leaves office? Good God, it’s like looking in a box of animal crackers coming to this site.”

President McCain! Yea, we’re a bunch of animals in a box called Delaware and the zoo keeper is Aunt Bea

  41. Truth Teller says:

    Jason

What does God have to do with it don’t tell me you folks believe in that Science Fiction book called the Bible.
You know the one that talks about the lady and the snake. and folks flying through the air with and without wings
