OFAC Country Listings

Filed in National by on March 12, 2008

Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), a department of the U.S. Treasury, administers and enforces economic and trade sanctions primarily against:

1. Govt’s of countries targeted by OFAC Regs
2. Terrorism
3. International Narcotics Traffickers
4. Proliferation of WMD’s

I was doing some training today and this list sort of struck me:

OFAC Country List
Balkans
Belarus
Burma
Ivory Coast
Cuba
Liberia
Democratic Republic of the Congo
Iran
Iraq
North Korea
Sudan
Syria
Zimbabwe

Anyone See any International narcotic countries on this list? Can anyone list the country on here that doesn’t have oil?

Can’t speak to the others but North Korea has been trafficking drugs for years and they don’t have any oil either.

  2. anon says:

    1. There’s a country called “Balkans?”

    2. How come Afghanistan and Pakistan aren’t on the list?

  3. Brian says:

North Korea and Burma both traffic drugs but nowhere near as much a Colombia who when they get their free trade agreement with us will make the ports of Wilmington and Philadelphia major drug epicenters. Lovely.

  4. RSmitty says:

But Brian, that’ll make it double-secret-probation legal, so we can slap it with a tax stamp, collect revenue (the legal part), then arrest the bastards for trafficking it in.

That saves the courts from pursuing the ubiquitous “evasion of tax” charge that typically is part of the suite of crimes of a drug trafficker.

    a Duffy siting! holy shhhhhhh

  6. Brian says:

    Lol

  7. G Rex says:

“Anyone see any international narcotic countries on this list?”

No, I don’t see Afghanistan or Columbia, or even Mexico. Was that your point?

  8. donviti says:

well G yet again you don’t read the entire post.

    even duffy gets it

  9. G Rex says:

Oh, but I did. Duffy answered one part of the question, I answered the other half. Actually, Mexico has oil AND is trafficking drugs, so that’s a double whammy.

Hey donviti, great conversation piece, however, there are very few ppl, including most who have commented above, that are educated enough on Foreign Policy to have a conversation about it.

My favorite representation to this point is “anon” who says:

    1. There’s a country called “Balkans?”
    2. How come Afghanistan and Pakistan aren’t on the list?

    Anon,
    1. Ask for a Map for XMAS.
    2. Afghanistan has been “Liberated” remember? and Pakistan is our ally – have you been to a 7-11 lately?

  11. Brian says:

    Hi Mike,

How do you define educated enough to comment on it? As I clearly am educated enough in both foreign policy and domestic policy- to quote a common euphemism from the 1980’s- what is the beef? G-Rex and I both have more than a little experience in foreign relations.

Like the lovely deep water ports in Dubai. I can only imagine how opening free trade up with Colombia is going to do more than open some markets for Exxon and a few other companies and bring more coke into my city. I do not think I will ever get to set up a coffee shop there, and given the level of violence, I am not sure I would want to. I also do not want that violence in to spread to my state. To me, it is like saying we need a free trade and exchange agreements with Myanmar or North Korea.

Looks like Venezuela might make it on the list as a twofer:

    Hey guys,

Can anyone tell me if Nigeria is part of this OFAC listing.

    I will appreciate that.

    Thanks.

  14. Julius says:

Hi, Adeyemi, are you so unNigerian that your wish is for Nigeria to be onthis “negative” listing? Wake up man!
