The Turkish military has not said how many troops are involved

Turkish ground forces have crossed the border into northern Iraq to target Kurdish rebels said to be sheltering there, Ankara has said. It said the raid began late on Thursday after an air and artillery bombardment.

Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan has said the offensive is limited in scale and troops will return as soon as possible.

    Dear Turks,

    Please do not attack Armenia.

Something else BushCo overlooked before going into Iraq. DUMB

The U.S. is set to hand over tactical satellite images. Because nobody knows more about invading a sovereign nation more than the U.S. I can imagine Rumsfeld telling the Turks how well they’ll be greeted.

  4. Brian says:

Wonderful. Ever wonder what Russia is going to say? Me too.

  5. Steve Newton says:

Not just Bush, but Bush ’41, and Clinton have all taken the Turks for granted.

And while we’re apologizing all to hell for the Armenian genocide, let’s not ignore the Kurdish cultural genocide the Turks have embarked upon for the past four decades….

  6. Dorian Gray says:

Turks and Kurds get along swimmingly… inside Turkey. PKK are terrorists from Northern Iraq. I guess we can ivade to fight fanthom AQ but the Turks aren’t entitled to destroy PKK? Of course other countries aren’t mocking of and apologizing for our Native American genodice either so it’s good for the goose, but for the gander, not so much.

This story has been building for years. I happen to follow this quite closely. (Disclosure: Donviti and I have some very close Turkish friends. Expats actually – with dual citizenship.)

As far as the “cultural genocide” Steve mentioned, I don’t know what he’s refering to. Considering “Turkiye” is 99% Muslim but quite secular, I think we should gine the G-word a rest. We have enough enemies right now.

Three cheers for Ataturk, Galatasaray and black tea!

    Ataturk Rocks!

My people are going to learn the principles of democracy the dictates of truth and the teachings of science. Superstition must go. Let them worship as they will, every man can follow his own conscience provided it does not interfere with sane reason or bid him act against the liberty of his fellow men.

Kurdish language schools have been made illegal; Kurdish holidays have been declared null and void; Kurdish names have been legally expunged and changed at the order of the Turkish government; Kurdish books are consistently outlawed; the Turks have relentlessly interfered with US and UN refugee aid to the Kurds since the early 1990s; to call the PKK a terrorist organization (which essentially aligns it with the likes of Hamas or Al Qaeda) is indicative of the acceptance of pro-Turkish propaganda at the expense of yet another ethnic minority.

  9. liz allen says:

Steve: you are absolutely correct. I have visited Turkey several times, spending as much as 6 wks a visit. The Turks hate the Kurds. They have been fighting them, invading Iraqi soverigntry for many years. The PPK is a freedom fighter organization, you can bet that Bush is behind this with a wink and a nod, just like the wink and nod that Israel has to continue the slaughter of the Palestinans. Gazans are living like rats, without electricity, water, or medicine, bombed daily with US F=16’s.

Turks are trying to stay secular! My sister in law just invested a million bucks in a restaurant in Istabul! She is worried things are going to go haywire if the Turks don’t pull troops off the Iraqi border. All of this is flaming the Russians! Making more and more enemies in the middle east.

If Clinton is elected, she will continue to flame the area, we can only hope Obama is the President and will take another foreign policy approach.

    Dear Turks,

Everyone is happy you are proud of your history. You have much to be proud of. Please do us all a favor and do not attack Armenia. If you do, Valdimir Putin is going to shove the Russian samovar so far up your collective butts it is going to make Tripoli look like a walk in the park. Thank you for your consideration in this matter.

  11. Brian says:

    Dear Turks and Turkophiles-

I like Turkey and want to make that clear before I share a message I got today from the orthodox world.

Now, I got a message from the orthodox world today. They are not happy. They would like to know if you know what happens when Greece, the Balkans, Russia and the orthodox world gets angry; and you are I am sure well aware Greeks and the orthodox have a very short fuse. Greeks and Armenians and the orthodox really love liberty and freedom. They have suffered a lot. They do not want to suffer more. They suggest that Kosovo is Serbia, Cyprus is Greece, Nargono-Karabagh is Armenia, and “Holy Mother” Russia will not be violated ever. They are very nervous about your actions in Iraq. Here is the video I got in the e-mail:

Please be sure to walk a little more softly, becuase no one wants this type of scorched earth policy to occur again. Frankly, I hope we can prevent this kind of thing peacefully becuase we all have mutual business interests that conflict of this type will interrupt. Independence is in Kosovo is a good thing, but it can be done peacefully; independence for the Kurds would be nice too. Thanks for your attetntion to this matter as it has me very worried.

  12. Brian says:

    Dear Turks and Turkophiles,

I got a historical message and video too. It illustartes the army of King Tigran II. This political development has me particualrly concerned and I hope you will encourage your represenatives to work with the OCSE and the UN to ensure that whatever poltical developments are underway are promptly defused. I do not want to “flame the Russians” any more than they already are. Please do this for all of us, here is the video I received:

Thank you. If you have ever lived with Russian Jews and the Orthodox you know how upset they get and how easily discussions about Islam will inflame their sensibilities. We need to work on peaceful developments together as partners to overcome historical problems for the mutual benefit of American, EU, Russian and other interested parties. Again thank you for helping the peace process along.

  13. Brian says:

    Dear Turkish Friends and Turkophiles,

I have lived with Turks from Tuva and Bikal, in fact I love their culture and their nomadic way of life, I could easily live that life with them. They do not agree with the current policy of the government in Anatolia. I am including part of my friend Aganak’s e-mail here, becuase I feel it expresses a widespread concern.

“Why Turkey want to do this, it give all Turk bad names among people who want peace. I go Moscow and and get attack for what Anatolia do from Ankara?”

Of course those Turks are Buddhist and speak Russian, but please folks do what you can to try to calm Russia’s unease over this situation. I have received e-mails of concern this morning and hope we can take this general mood into consideration and work for peace. Thanks.
