    It helps to learn the biographies and the zeitgeist around each classical composer to see where they fit in to history. That actually makes the music a lot more listenable for me. Bio-documentaries pop up on cable all the time.

    If you are political junkie there is lots of fodder to link the music to the political intrigues of the day, and you can hear it in the music.

    Even watching something like the film “Amadaeus” (mostly hokum) illuminated Mozart for me (who I already liked) and I went out and bought a copy of Mozart’s Requiem, and attended a performance of Magic Flute and liked it.

    Thanks but no thanks. I’ve tried over the years and thanks to the NEA I’ve seen the sausage being made.
