Delawares Toll on Nearby States

Is anyone else as embarrassed about Delaware’s toll plazas as I am?  We really shouldn’t be charging for our tiny stretch of 95 at all.

I would be fine with closing the toll booths, closing all ramps and exits, and encasing the entire roadway in a tunnel of razor wire from New Jersey to Maryland. And never paving it or setting foot on it again in any way.

The toll booths aren’t so much of a problem as is the doofusness of the DE stretch of I-95 not charging the going rate for parking.

So the state is struggling with highway funding and just blew 30 million on a bridge to No Where “ Indian River” and you want to close a toll that is collecting money. Congratulations! You’re qualified to be a Democratic candidate in Delaware.

We charge more per mile than any other state in the nation. The tollbooths are ALWAYS backed up, and we are increasing the traffic on our local roads with toll-avoiders.

The Inlet bridge has nothing to do with it. I would love to see the “income” that we get for 95 after labor costs, secondary road wear and the assorted other costs that we accumulate with the toll activity.

  5. This is a stooooooooooooooopid post.

Why the hell shouldn’t we charge a toll? We had the option of letting the feds PAY FOR BUILDING OUR STRETCH OF 1-95, Donviti….and we said no.

We, Delaware, paid to build our stretch and thereby earned the right to the toll. Do you know why there is no toll into PA? Let me tell you. It is not for what ever idiocy you are imagining…………..it is because they are legally prohibited to do so because they took the federal dollars at the time to have it built for them. We didn’t.

There is not one damned thing wrong with the tolls that we grab beyond the fact the the Powers in Dover like to abuse this little slush fund.

  6. Sorry for the snide….you don’t want to know what kind of night I had.

  7. liberalgeek says:

Our toll plazas are congested, under-staffed and over-priced. If we cannot do it right, I say rip it out. As for Hank above, if there was a tax that Delaware levied that was higher than any other in the nation and in order to pay it you had to spend an hour every Friday afternoon waiting for the privilege, he would be the first to whine and bitch.

  8. We should have more EZ PASS high speed lanes and force people into using that system.

  9. anon says:

The problem is too many exits in Delaware. We are using a 23-mile chunk of an interstate as an exurban commuter road. If out-of-staters could just sail through Delaware they would be happy to pay.

Delaware exits off I-95 used to each have their own toll booths. Put them back, and the congestion goes away.

You have got to be kidding. EZ PASS is one of the most egregious attacks on civil liberties out there. Plus their customer service sucks. I’d rather pay cash.

anon #9 is certainly right — I-95 in DE serves as NCCO beltway and an interstate. The toll is less of a problem than is the fact that you pay more for higher levels of unrelieved congestion. And I don’t think I have even gone through that toll plaza — even at its most congested — where the majority of the toll lanes were open.

  12. G Rex says:

Sure we tax out-of-staters with toll plazas on I-95, but aren’t they coming here for the tax-free shopping? That’s what the sign says, anyway. Maybe in addition to EZ Pass lanes there should be a 9 items or less lane.

Of course, I still believe Delaware should be annexed by Maryland when they split California into NorCal and SoCal, just to keep the number of stars on the flag the same.

Thank God we paid a consulting firm so much to come up with Delaware Home of Tax Free Shopping.
