Gannett to sell suck-ass News Journal and three other papers
Word is that Gannett is into making money and not into the suck-ass News Journal.
This investor conference call transcript tends to support the buzz on the street. If the suits at Gannett want to know why the paper is underperforming and what to do to fix it they should have asked me.
1) Fire Doug Williams. He only goes to press with loving backrubs of Delaware’s ruling elite and wouldn’t recognize investigative journalism if it bit him in the ass.
2) Fire the rest of the Editorial Board. Those fossiles must be a huge drain on the bottom line and what do they add? Jack squat.
H.L. Mencken said “A journalist’s job is to comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable.” The News Journal under the editorship of Doug Williams version is “A journalist’s job is to comfort the comfortable and afflict the afflicted.” Who needs that bullshit? Good riddance.
You nailed the problem. One can bypass the editorial board, but the economics are this: there are many more readers than there are elite: side with the readers if you want to make money.
A few months ago I heard Al Mascitti speak on his WDEL show that one of the reasons he left TNJ was because his impression was that the people who run the paper would rather be in the inner circle of Delaware politics than make waves. I wish I had the audio; obviously he explained it much more completely and eloquently than I could possibly do.
How long did it take TNJ to cover the sidewalk issue in Wilmington? How about the legislative process in Delaware? Without the blogs and talk radio they might never have covered HB4 or SB4. We canceled our subscription about six months ago, and I haven’t really missed it.
You missed a reason for the New Urinal’s poor performance.
Gannett newspapers stink.
All of them.
I know a couple people who work there, and they say they haven’t heard anything of that sort.
The numbers may suck, but that’s par for the course for newspapes today.
