Around the Horn Friday(c) !!! The Pink Slip & Red Carpet Preview Edition

Filed in National by on July 28, 2007

Another busy week in delaware blogland. Not only did I break the story about Mike Castle kicking Wenky to the curb in order to make room for a more seasoned street fighter – but Dave at First State Politics and I gave everyone the first glimpse at“plans” for a Delaware blog Awards and banquet. The word plans is in quotes for a reason. Let’s just say now that we know there is some interest – the planning will begin in earnest.

In the meantime – what are you guys fretting over…?

WGMD has been in the blogs this week thanks to Jud’s post at FSP and Mike’s at DWA about Randy Nelson being prescribed the AstraZeneca pill. I don’t know the first thing about WGMD so for me to comment on it would be like George Bush commenting on Islam (or the ecomony, or internal combustion, or the alphabet). Anyway, I think it is interesting that my new friendMaria Evans at the WGMD has passed on commenting – and she knows alot (perhaps too much) about it.

Staying with Radio, but moving north, Allan Loudell is on vacation but prolly still reading this blog (Hi Allan). His post about how Delaware Democrats support for Markell or Carney corrolates with which candidate they support for President is worth commenting upon (especially if you (like me) HATE the DLC with a passion that burns like a red hot ember).

Dana’s post of the week includes a video that everyone should view (especially if you don’t get why I HATE what George Bush has done to this country with a passion that burns like a red hot ember). . He also has some news for you guys with the unpublished novel sitting in your desk drawer.

Kilroy has some funny pictures one of which illustrates what happens to school board members who abuse thier position to get jobs for family members inthe age of the internest.

Nancy Willing (who is warming up to Biden for Prez) covers the Markell co-chairs story. Read the list and you have to admit that markell covers a hell of alot of bases. Downstate/Upsate – Insiders/Outsiders – Workers/Business. Looking at that list you half expect Alan Levin himself to appear right next to Mike P. (By “Return Day” they will be signed up – mark my words.)

An instant runnoff voting letter by Tyler Nixon at Merit Bound Alleyneeds to generate much more chatter. The “spoiler” issue with third parties is my bete noir and instant runnoff voting would put that issue to rest right quick.

If you still want Democrats to stand infront of GOP shills and party hacks and respond to questions like “Senator, why do you want the terrorists to win?” – then go over and say “amen” to this Hube Felix post at the Confusion of Rhodey.

Duffy over at Pencader Daze thinks we can win against the terrorists if we were only more bloodthirsty like the ….wait for it……the Red Chinese. Has conservatism lost it’s way folks? You be the judge. Oh, and if you need more proof in order to decide read “Recycling Myths” presented by the Right Honorable Bishop Paul Smith. Warning: The stupid. It burns.

I know. I know…

Anyway…at least Ryan S takes a stab at being the real conservative around here. naming the Republicans who are opting out of the YouTUBE Debate as the “hacks of the week.” Good on you Ryan. Keep these phoney conservatives honest.

After reading all of that I need to purify myself in the clean clear waters of LakeTommywonk. Tom held up the Drinking Liberally flag this week (my bad). AND gives some insight into the Tour De France which will be of interest to all of you Francophile Surrender Monkeys AND you folks who put other people’s blood into your system just prior to a big sporting event.

Well, that uptick in my mood was shortlived. I went ahead and clicked over to Kavips and took a shotgun blast inthe face from Dick Cheney. That post needs more attention than I can give it in two glib sentences. A longer response post is, even now, forming in my head. [Preview: Why is it that whenever anyone predicts what Bush/Cheney is going to do next it always sounds like the pitch for a crazy Saturday Night Live sketch?]

Mike’s last stop at the Tyler Place Family Resort in Vermont has prompted me to send a link to the place to Mrs. Liberal.

KarmicJay’s word of the day is one of my favs: jalopy.

Last but not least , at the soapbox, Matt defends blogging(not that it needs defending) and points out that “it’s a great thing to do, especially in little old Delaware, where your blogs are read by just about everybody who pays attention to local politics.” Right on bro!!

And that reminds me. Plan on being at the Blogger AWARDS & summit. Yes, I know that I called you stupid two minutes ago – but that is ancient history in blogtime.

  1. ooooh gooooooood
Maria has become a good friend through emails and our mutual appreciation of the art of blogging and outside of her somewhat obsessive interest in the eating habits of Laura Bush (you will have to scroll the WGMD yourself), she is one of the finest bloggers in the state!

  2. Anon II says:

OK I give up what is her blog site?

  3. Is this last week’s ATH?!?! Everything reads so familiar.

  4. jason330 says:

I just fixed it. All new and improved!!!

  5. linda says:

PLEASE TELL ME JUST WHAT AN ‘ASTRAZENECA PILL IS AND THANKS

  6. jason330 says:

It was my cute way of saying he got a pink slip. Too cute for my own good I guess.

  7. Joshua says:

“Nancy Willing (who is warming up to Biden for Prez) covers the Markell co-chairs story.”

And by ‘covers’ I take it you mean ‘printing the press release issued from the Markell campaign verbatim.’ You could teach a chimp to do that, and not a very bright chimp either.

Not much of a story either. Only 5 sitting state legislators…? There were 62 of those last time I counted. I wonder who the others are supporting…

And are those his parents names I see on the list? Gee that’s newsworthy. The candidate’s parents support him. Stop the presses!

  8. Ryan S. says:

    Hey Jace…mind fixing my link?

    it says “.coml” right now…

  9. Hube says:

Hey dude — do you EVER bother to check who posts at Colossus? Felix wrote that goddamn post.

Your powers of perception are about as keen as your political acumen.

  10. anon says:

Chill out Hube, if it wasn’t for Jason nobody would be talking about your blog at all.

  11. Hube says:

Yeah, gee. You “got” me there anon. Blogs that actually put some thought behind their posts might indeed be less visited!

  12. oedipa maas says:

What is it with republicans and this not talking to people BS?

They are going to town on Obama who won’t appear on Fox, but they forget that Fox went to town with the false story that Obama attended a madrassa. Fox continually lets folks refer to Obama by his middle name — doing more of the dog-whistle politics to their base of invoking the scary brown people. Why participate in something that Fox is going to use to its own purposes anyway? For all of those folks taunting Obama for his Fox News stance, I NEVER see a single one of them call for Fox to stop trying to make the guy look like a Muslim terrorist.

But then, some of them (and some Dems too) want to have his head over the idea of talking with countries we have serious issues with. Problem is that NOT talking to these folks isn’t making anyone safer (see: recent N. Korea talks that successfully reinstituted much of the Clinton agreements with N. Korea) and certainly does not make us look like the grownups in the room. And talking doesn’t mean that you are making peace deals, or trade deals or even weapons deals. It does mean that you are at least trying to not let the situation get worse.

And then, we have those repubs that won’t even speak to regular Americans — Republican candidates pulling out of the You Tube debates or Mike Castle taking phone meetings with a pre-screened audience. Say what you want about the You Tube thing, there is no doubt that the only screening is the moderator winnowing the field (for interest and ratings). And people who are running for the position of CEO of the Free World can’t be credible deciding to NOT talk to those that they want to lead.

Someone needs to remind these repubs that this is not high school and success is no longer measured in how many people you talk to who are wearing the right brand of sneakers or who listen to the same non-sellout bands you do.

  13. Duffy says:

Jason, as usual, you infer things from my post that are not there. Nowhere did I suggest that we should emulate the Chinese. Rather that we are treading very lightly by comparison. Not to mention their situation is very different from ours. They have a very large number of people in the western part of the country that are sympathetic to the terrorists. Imagine if Iraq was happening in California instead of say, Iraq.

  14. Mat Marshall says:

    Anon:

For the record, Rhodey has a Technorati authority of 113, which I think might be the highest in the state. While that doesn’t necessarily speak for credibility, it does mean that he has 113 unique links throughout the web, and they’re not limited to Delaware politics either. I tend to agree more with Jason than I do Hube or Felix on most things, BUT it’s unfair to say that the only coverage of COR is at DelawareLiberal (which has an authority of 52… I have an authority of 8).

  15. jason330 says:

Imagine if Iraq was happening in California instead of say, Iraq.

With Bush/Cheney in charge anything is possible.

    Matt,

    A technno-what-ee?

  16. anon says:

    he has 113 unique links

Just means he’s part of a webring.

  17. Carney is still the inside favorite for the nomination. I plan to be there with him on Return Day and accept his concession speech.

  18. Joshua
why don’t you start a blog and do some of the heavy lifting that DE Liberal does before you start in on Jason for linking to a presser.

I wish that he had decided to highlight my insightful post on the county land use and the corruption surrounding the comprehensive plan but then he hates posts that pick on Democrats for the most part.

  19. What is going on at WGMD is scary. Will the good folks still employed there be now fearful for their jobs if they cover anything left of center?

I have a feeling that the station owner started to read through the emails sent and rec’d by his staff. Just a feeling, mind you.

  20. Mat Marshall says:

    Jason:

Technorati is a website that monitors blog activity, ranks blogs by the most links to said blog, etc. It has a feature called “authority” which, as I said, shows how many unique links one blog gets. It doesn’t really necessarily speak for how good or bad a blog is, but it does mean that people are reading it. You have what I think is the second-highest in the state.

    Anon:
I don’t have time to look through the thousands of different links he has coming to his blog, but when I looked, I didn’t see any that ended in mu.nu. Maybe that affects his incoming links, but 113 is quite a big number.

  21. Mat Marshall says:

    Edit:

I saw Rhymes with Right. And that has a much, MUCH higher authority than Rhodey.

Again, this is more or less a novelty.

  22. In the onset of blogging people made a point of literally begging for a blogroll link. Many still do. It is not much of judge of worth IMHO.

  23. Mat Marshall says:

Nancy, I wholeheartedly agree. But I was just saying that Jason isn’t the only one who covers what Hube says.

Oh, and Jason, I have absolutely no manners. Thank you for the mention.

  24. Ryan S. says:

My authority sits at 194 right now…
    http://www.technorati.com/blogs/www.jokerstotheright.com

    I think it’s an interesting novelty-type thing.

  25. Screw the authority. I like the hits I’m getting everyday. I used to do a lot of linking to other websites on more national issues and my ranking was much higher, but this local blogging thing suits me just well. When you have thugs like John Still wanting to punch you in the face, it makes it ALL worth it.

I do love playing around on Technorati, though.

  26. Yeah, Nancy. I used to BEG for links, too in the early days. Now I’m content with going out and meeting people locally who I know read my blog. I once got quite high on the “Ecosystem” and now I’ve slumped back quite a bit. That’s OK. I’ve always thought actual hits and unique visitors are a better measure of a site’s success than how many links and trackbacks one receives. In the early days, it was a fun game to play, though!

  27. “Early days.” I sound so damned ancient…

  28. r smitty says:

    Francophile Surrender Monkeys

You can mention that, but not a peep about your new logo? You swine!

Hey, where is punk, I mean geek? What did you do to him?

  29. jason330 says:

Geek, DV and I are taking oscillating sine waves approach to scheduling.

Now be nice or I will not say the nice thing about your boy Dick that I was going to say.

  30. Ryan S. says:

Mike, how long have you been blogging?

  31. r smitty says:

Now be nice or I will not say the nice thing about your boy Dick that I was going to say.

Depending on one’s grasp of the English language, that could be one dangerous statement.

  32. jason330 says:

With my rudimentry grasp of english, upon re-reading the comment, I have some regrets.
